It's eight regular season games per team, there will still only be 8 teams per conference in the playoffs. The extra teams got invited as they're all within six games of the eight spot and therefore were considered still in with a chance if the season carried on as normal.

The NBA's board of governors intends to approve a league proposal on a 22-team format to restart the season in Orlando, Florida, sources told ESPN.

The conference call and vote is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, sources said.

Commissioner Adam Silver and the league's advisory/finance committee have shared the broad details of a plan with teams to play at The Walt Disney World Resort, sources said. The plan includes 13 Western Conference teams and nine Eastern Conference teams, eight regular-season games, a possible play-in tournament for the eighth seed, and playoffs, sources said.

The top 16 teams in the Eastern and Western conferences will be joined by teams currently within six games of eighth place in the two conferences -- New Orleans, Portland, San Antonio, Sacramento, Phoenix and Washington, sources said.

The play-in tournament will include the No. 8 and No. 9 teams -- if the ninth seed finishes the regular season within four games of the eighth, sources said. In that case, the No. 8 seed enters a double-elimination tournament, and the No. 9 seed a single-elimination tournament, sources said.

Teams will begin training at team sites in July and advance to full training camps in Orlando later that month, sources said.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association are negotiating details of the return to play's safety protocols and competition.

Life in the NBA bubble will be governed by a set of safety protocols. While players and coaches will be allowed to golf or eat at outdoor restaurants, they will also need to maintain social distancing, sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

The NBA is planning to have uniform, daily testing for the coronavirus within the Disney campus environment, sources told ESPN.

If a player tests positive for the virus, the league's intent would be to remove that player from the team to quarantine and treat individually -- and continue to test other team members as they play on, sources said.

Employees at the Disney resort will have to maintain similar protocols. For example, no staff will be allowed into players' rooms, and hallways will be carefully managed to avoid crowding, sources told Shelburne.

The NBA suspended its season on March 11 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

So is it still going to be the regular playoff format once the play in tournament for the final seeds are finished?

The NBA is likely salivating over a potential Lakers/Pelicans first round match up. The whistles for the Pelicans play in game might be suspect.

I kinda hope the NBA ends up shifting their season in general after this. Instead of Oct-June, I'd rather have it December-August.

That's not going to happen

The first month, month and a half of the NBA season would basically be dominated by NFL playoff talk

Those are regular season then so they can deal with that but I think the playoffs would take shine off them for a min

NBA season just needs to be shorter in general. Like the playoffs itself is almost 3 months when it shouldn't be that damn long either

If they start on Christmas, then really the only conflict with the NFL will be the final week of December, January, and then the Super Bowl. After that, they have no competition until April when baseball starts, and I think they are fine going head to head there since the overlap between the two fan bases likely isn’t as much as with the NFL. Ending their season in August means they avoid any competition with the NFL except for essentially one month. It’s likely a much better business strategy on their part.

My thought was during the end of the NFL season, the NBA would only have competition on a couple saturdays and sunday. No Monday/Thursday to deal with. Having less having eyes on the first 2-3 weeks of the season while teams are working off rust isn't the worst thing. But having less eyes for like a third of your season has always been questionable in my point of view.

Shams is saying opening night is Dec 1.

I’d be shocked if that sticks. Kawhi will be load managing the first two months of the season if he’s only given a few weeks off before training camp starts.
