No rookie has succeeded on the Lakers the last few years Russell - goes to the Nets and becomes an All Star Randle - Put up All Star numbers on the Pelicans Ingram - Finally became mini KD everyone compared him to and put up 24PPG in an All Star season Ball - Complimentary PG on a good team Look at the bright side. They won't be drafting high for the next 10 years because they traded all their picks just like the Clippers You tell me if having Julius Randle is a good thing lol Yes those guys managed to turn their careers around, unfortunately Russel and Randle have both regressed hope that doesnโt happen to Ball and Ingram though. Ehh he's overpaid but he won't be there forever How did D'Lo regress? He averaged a career high 23 and 7 this year. He was on a bad team. Randle regressed trying live up to that deal tho but I blame coaching on that since he played better under Miller

If they offered Ingram and Ball for Kawhi, then I would have taken that deal in a heartbeat over DeRozan. At that time Ingram was injury prone and Ball couldnโt score shit, the lakers were also a losing team with them as the main guys. I donโt know how Gentry turned them around. Ingram was 20 coming off a season where he shot 39% from 3. There was enough talent and upside there for Pop to work with and mold into something better, IMO. I'm not a fan of Ball as a player, but if he was a complimentary piece in the deal, then it would have been another young player that Pop could try to turn into something. Now, if Pop didn't want young players who he had to develop, but rather a proven player with a track record, then that changes things. They weren't going to get an all star player for one year of an injured Kawhi. The Raptors didn't care because they had already soured on DeRozan so they were willing to take the one year gamble. Other teams didn't have that expendable piece. But still, even at the time, I take the young talent with upside over DeRozan. I trust Pop a lot, and I think young players with upside who could space the floor would have worked better with Aldridge.

They could not make that trade with the Lakers
Any other team had those players they do it but they couldn't give in to Kawhi and make that move

Even if the Spurs felt they couldn't trade to the Lakers or any WC team, they really cut their own legs by leaking it they wouldn't trade to any teams in the West. When you cut half the league out of the bat you hinder negotiating power.

They were f***ed multiple ways If Kawhi had two years on his deal except one they probably could got a better deal but with everyone knowing he wanted to go to L.A. and he wasn't signing an extension anywhere else it hurt them because no one is going to pay a premium for a rental player You can do that in baseball but not basketball

Idk, people close to the team have reported that Raptors offer was the best they could get. As has been mentioned everyone knew Kawhi was gonna leave and no one had seen him play in the year so there was a lot of whispering that he wasnโt gonna be as good anymore, which of course ended up being comically wrong. Part of me does wish they had done the Lakers trade though just because the Lakers would have had to give up some of the young guys, not had as much to offer for AD, and Kawhi would have 100 percent gone to the Clippers after a year anyway and it would have been hilarious.
Iโve made my peace with the deal that happened. Iโve long advocated that the Spurs needed to tank and start over but the financial aspect is something Iโve thought more about, especially as the Spurs ownership has already sold two teams to Vegas and is selling a minority sake in the Spurs now. San Antonio hasnโt seen a losing team in two decades, the Spurs being bad for a prolonged period of time would be disastrous for a small market team already barely breaking even most years.
And I donโt think the Spurs now are in some insurmountable situation that people try to paint it as. Everyone is gonna want cap space heading into 2021 and the spurs have 3 (maybe 4 if DeMar opts in) big expiring contracts. Itโs not gonna be hard to find trade partners if they want to. And theyโve got some solid young pieces to start building around. Their scouting and player development is still top notch. Theyโre gonna be fine.

Lonnie Walker and Dejounte Murray are pretty solid for their positions and, if they extend Derrick White and Jakob Poetlt, the Spurs could have a long term young core growing up together that can be effective now and could be the base to build up for the future. The thing is that, while they're good, neither of them is good enough to carry the team and turn things around at any given moment, which makes the dependence on Aldridge, DeRozan, Mills and Gay to get the offense going consistently a bit of an issue at times.

I agree, I'm not convinced anyone right now is destined to be a superstar to build around but they're at least solid. But, they're also probably going to be a lottery team for the next two years, so who knows if they find something in the draft. And if not, I actually think down the road they might be in a solid position to stockpile enough assets and wait for the next disgruntled superstar who asks for a trade.

Lonnie is kind of inconsistent though, so I can see why Pop is hard on him. The tools are there but he seems like he kinda loses focus at times? That Rockets game where he went nuts and led the team to the comeback win I think showed how far he can go but it'll take some more time.

He's young tho with the tools I get Pop wants people to be perfect on the court but imo Lonnie won't grow unless you give him time to learn from his mistakes.

The reality of isolation in a bubble for up to 3 months in a state with rising cases is likely starting to set in for some of these players. Hopefully no star is going to stay home but I can see someone like Dame who has enough money for 3 lifetimes and is on a team with no shot of getting past the first round if they make it at all just staying home if he felt any sort of way about it. Thatโs why I wish they just went with the 16 teams and right into the playoffs. As much as MLB is messing up, a condensed season where they get their money and dip is probably the most logical thing to do at this point.

Lonnie Walker cut his trademark hair, and wrote a long post explaining why. Reveals he was sexually abused and assaulted as a child.
I'm sad something that awful happened to him but proud of his bravery and speaking out. I hope his story helps a lot of people.

So we may have some problems with the restart plan
Also:
Yeah I want basketball back but looks like they're gonna have to figure some things out. I hope the players have their voices heard.
Very interesting to see in that Yahoo article that there was fear among players about opposing the star players who have been vocal about wanting to restart.....

Interesting question: If Covid happened last year, or if this year's Lakers were last year's Lakers (missing the playoffs/no AD), how different would this restart discussion be? The one person who benefits most from a restart is LeBron. He doesn't have many years left as an elite player, and the Lakers have a real shot at a title this year. Is there that much urgency for anyone else? Kawhi won a title last year. Giannis has his whole career ahead of him. KD is out. The Warriors don't care since Klay is out. Seems pretty clear who the players are afraid to speak out against if that's the case, although I'm not exactly a LBJ fan, so maybe I'm biased.

Nothing is stopping that reopening plan They already threw out the possibility of replacement players and they will go that route. Not enough players will ball at the chance of missing playing ball. The most notable name to say heโs uncomfortable has been Melo while a few others said they may not go for reasons we canโt discuss

LeBron isnโt the only important voice. CP3 is the leader of the players union and he was on a playoff Rockets team last year. Warriors had everyone healthy sans KD around this time. Toronto was not going to let their Kawhi investment walk out the door for nothing. LeBron has a big voice but with him out of the playoffs at this point his voice wouldnโt have mattered at all
