Man, the difference in tone between this show and Z is crazy. It’s hard to believe it was all one manga.
I love Z but I find this a way better show. 35 episodes in and
Neither the main characters nor the villains are super powerful. Each villain is as big of a threat as the one before. There’s actual fear of being killed off by the characters So far no insane constipated power ups I like Goku using the flying nimbus instead of everyone being able to fly. I like the power pole and how he can’t just energy blast everything Actual focus on looking for dragon balls I like the slightly more Chinese and mystical feel of the show as opposed to the sci Fi and alien feel of Z
Also, now that I think about it, the thing that pissed me most about Z, aside from the filler, is that a Goku got so powerful that they had to find ways to keep him away from the action a lot of the time so he could make a dramatic entrance and kill all the lower end guys rather quickly.
Here, he’s all over the place and sometimes by himself. After seeing wussy Gohan, it’s refreshing seeing Goku as a badass child who isn’t afraid of a fight.
The only thing bothering me is Master Roshi and how persevered him and Oolong get. Lots of sexual humor. I laughed at Goku patting everyone’s crotch.

Yeh I don't like Z.
Dragon ball original is really good. All the characters are relevant or fun. Plus there is more actual martial arts.

I made this exact same thread about 6 months ago while re-watching Dragon Ball. I agree with everything you said. I love all the Dragon Ball anime, even enjoy GT for what it is, but the original is by far the best in terms of actual storytelling.

Both series have their own strengths imo. Can't get into the Dragon Ball anymore, tried a couple times to rewatch, but Z I have no issue going back to. I guess it's more the fact I sometimes just need to see some over-the-top action and top notch voice acting. Call it nostalgia, I don't know. Super though, eh. Varying degrees. Like the first two arcs, the remakes of the movies, are terrible. I like the Universe 6 tournament. Goku Black got repetitive but I had fun at the conclusion. I love the Universal Survival arc but some of the more god awful universes like 2 have me grating my teeth. And, well, Broly I felt was the strongest the series had been since the Cell saga.

Z always left a bad taste in my mouth with Gohans overall character arc and Goku. I enjoyed everything up until he became the great Saiyabitch. I mean they then built him back up as this badass with the highest potential power of any character on the show only to have him get bodied by Majin Buu and not play any role in the final battle. Whilst Vegeta gets bitched out again by Goku, who has to be the saviour of every single villian of the show.
Goku became waaay to OP and every other character suffered because of it. There is only so many damn times you can write "this guy saves everyone... again" and never have another character get that moment to triumph. I tried giving Super a shot, but it's about 10x more Goku masterbatory than Z ever was. /rant
Nah I do enjoy a lot of Z but everytime I see it with hindsight, or watch the abridged series it just makes it harder to watch

I think the OG Dragon Ball is the best shonen ever. I also love Z which was incredibly influential and Super is also fun in its own right, but it's just impossible to beat Dragon Ball for me. I love the characters, the humor, the martial arts, and the fact that it feels like a real, honest adventure. It's a world I love spending time in, and it's a shame Z and Super let a lot of that go by the wayside.

I think DB is the best of the DB franchise.
Z/Super are great and all but I find DB to be the most enjoyable.
GT can f*** off

DBZ biggest strenght will always be the charming characters(which makes it suck that the charming characters are useless) and design.

I love Z (at least through Frieza), but you can tell DB is Toriyama having the time of his life and being insanely creative with a world of characters. Over the years it became my favorite for how fun and diverse it is.

I’m just now finishing the Tien Saga with 2nd tournament and it’s just now getting to the familiar dbz style of guys powering up and hiding their true strength.
I do say, I don’t mind it yet. The stories before were a nice adventure and it’s fun watching young Goku murk people. And it doesn’t drag.
Though, you gotta see how crazy Goku and Tenshinhan and Master Roshi are and think:
These guys got their ass kicked buy a bunch of Saibamen and Radditz? This is low level power to Radditz?

Also, man I didn’t know how big a part Lunch played in this show.
I mean how does the author completely forget about a main character like that. I can understand if he said she wasn’t important to the plot of Z as people were dead or in other planets at the time.
Also, they should have created a third series after Cell considering the drastic changes made in the Buu saga with all the new characters, aging of characters, and there was an extended period of peace between Cell and Buu.

I know the movies dont count, but the Bojack Unleashed took place after the Cell Saga right? That was alright, considering Future Trunks looked badass with the Cut Up vest. But I hate how Gohan knows that's Bojack and his crew are the baddies. Just go straight SSJ2 and wipe them out. But yea it would have been cool to watch an arc where Gohan has to learn how to control SSJ2 and be the main character. And how conflicted Vegeta is knowing that Gokus son surpassed him.

I personally think the best arcs of the original run of Dragon Ball (Z included) are the World Tournament Arcs, they have some of the best fights of the entire series too. They show the potential Toriyama had as an author and as a story teller, cutting a lot of fat shonen and Dragon Ball had to their stories to a much more streamlined and tight plot that felt natural and strong progression with nearly every installment. With the occasional reference back to previous entries, like the Man Wolf's appearance in the second tournament.
It gave Goku a real tangible goal too outside of "get a new power up/make number go up", with every tournament it feeling like he was inching ever closer to it.
Even as someone that likes Piccolo a lot (and admittedly a lot of his plot is in the Z half of the story), I can't deny that the original Dragon Ball is generally superior to the Z portion of the story for a lot of the reasons people have already listed.
And yeah, generally Goku is more likable and relatable in the Dragon Ball portion of the story than later on.

Okay, watching this show, it gives me a greater appreciation for Dragon ball GT. At least the first couple of episodes. I see now what they were trying to do, Turing Goku back into a child and making the focus back to looking for dragon balls. As an novice to the series, I didn’t like the child goku and liked that they abandoned that story relatively quick, and can see why Cartoon Network decided to skip the entire arc and go to the familiar Z like adult goku story.
I have a few questions to anyone who has this show on DVD or seen it on cArtoon network or the funimation app.
1. What’s with the sound quality? I am watching on the Funimation app, and why is the sound so low and apparently Mono. I was listening on headphones and the sound only comes out on one side. 2. Where’s the “next on dragon ball” part? 3. The Funi app only has “Japanese” option, uncut and some thing called “title:. What is Title? 4. I did remember seeing some Dragon ball episodes on Cartoon Network, and they had a different theme song for some reason. Since they went to the trouble of makin a new theme and since they had new voice actors, did they replace the music like Z or did they fix the audio issues?
Currently watching the Piccolo jr. storyline. Man, any reason why they didn’t just have Goku fight Piccolo jr. while they were both still you and Goku would have probably been able to take him out at his current level?
Man, Yajirobe is a lot stronger and a bit less cowardly than he’s portrayed in Z. It’s weird how he stood toe to toe with Goku at first.
How strong is mr. Popo? If Kami couldn’t kill Piccolo since it would be suicide, why couldn’t Popo just fight him?
Seeing the latest bunch of episodes explain so much of things in Z. Like When did everyone learn to fly? Oh, so Goku had to learn how to do all the wacky Ki stuff, with the projectile blasts, sensing others power levels and suppressing their own power levels. I thought it was just lazy writing when it happened in Z since he didn’t show it in the earlier episodes and suddenly it’s all over the place on Namek.
Goku being relatively invincible against most of the DB villains makes getting his ass handed to him by Radditz and killed by piccolo much more shocking and jarring. I wonder why the Subititles, still use the word “kami sama” without at least explaining that it means God? Why and how did Pilaf get/open the Denshi Jar?
