Lindsay Ellis said while watching it she thought of Showgirls a number of times... that sounds like a glowing endorsement to me Showgirls with cat people would be f***ing phenomenal. "I'm not a stripper. I'm a meow-ncer!" I'll just leave this bit I picked up from the NYT review:

Man all these reviews are making me want to see it more. Just so I can say as I lay in my death bed, "I saw CATS in the theatres...".

The more I hear about this movie the more I kind of want to experience it.

I think the primary reason this film exists is to give critics a chance to one up each other on jokes in their reviews.
Won't being seeing these quotes on a commercial
"Can you make a movie so bad that the Academy takes back your Best Director Oscar? Asking for Tom Hooper." -Collider
"Cat-astrophic." -Hollywood Reporter
"To assess Cats as good or bad feels like the entirely wrong axis on which to see it. It is, with all affection, a monstrosity." -Vulture
"Cats is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs." -The Beat

The Rotten Tomatoes page for this movie is a hoot, just for the critic quotes.

There were multiple ANIMATED Cats Movies turned down by Webber over decades because he wanted to maintain the integrity of the musical, it being live action with people in costume. After all that, after saying shit like that... THIS is the Movie Version of Cats that will forever exist.
Well, you made your bed, lay in it...

Webber flew across the Atlantic to vote in the house of lords to make life worse for poor people and the disabled. This unpleasant movie is the legacy he deserves for being such a deeply unpleasant person.

At least not in the traditional sense.

In a weird way, the increasingly insane reviews are probably the best advertisement the filmmakers could hope for, since it means people will probably go see it out of a morbid curiosity to see if it lives up to said insane reviews.

Man, Tom Hooper a few years ago made two great biopics (The Damned United and The King’s Speech) Now he’s doing these shitty musical adaptations. What happened? I did not like the Leś Mis movie... thought it was too long for something where every was singing none stop... Russell Crowe sounded like he was reading his lines while yawning. Eventually, filmmakers reach a point where they go and make a movie that's the nadir of their talent & that which they cannot escape from.

Someone on Twitter said "On a scale from 0 to 5, this gets Onion."
And that the person sitting next to them had their eyes rolled into the back of their head, begging for it to stop.

I went to the critic's screening of this on Tuesday.
I'm enjoying the reviews trashing it as much as you are, but they're nothing compared to having to watch and really sit with the absurdity that this thing got made and released.
I don't want to spoil the movie, but there's things I could tell you about it that you wouldn't believe until it's staring you right in the face.

Alright, let's do this like when I reviewed the Enzo rap album last year. If someone sends me $5 for a Taco Bell box, I'll write 1,000 words on it.

"Cats is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs."-The Beat LMFAO That one got me. I hate musicals and I’m morbidly curious to go watch this for the experience alone. And I’m sober too, so f*** it, I’d be going in with NO cover or shield.

I loved Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables and tend to be a lot less harsh on musical adaptations than critics. But Cats struck me as one of those shows that couldn't really work outside of a stage. The CGI also creeped me the f*** out since the initial trailer.
This should've just been a movie with singing cats instead of actors. At least it would've been adorable.
