I'm assuming they could do some rigmarole to explain how Neo is back, something about the machines kept him in cold storage until the time was right, etc. But I have no idea how Trinity could be back. She isn't even mostly dead, just all dead. In the Matrix Online, in which the Wachowskis had input on the story and have declared canon, Trinity plays a big post-death role: I wouldn't be shocked if Matrix 4 recycles some of the stuff from Matrix Online.

That just kind of makes it sound like there was a never a 'real' world to begin with, ugh.

The first film never needed sequels. That's what everyone has told me and is kind of why I never have made the time to watch the sequels. I remember I wasn't at all interested in the movie until some of my friends on my floor in college asked me to go and I had nothing else going on at the time so I went. I absolutely loved it, but with the sequels, I ran into the same situation where I wasn't really interested and never saw them.

I watched Matrix Reloaded, and hated it so much I have never watched Matrix Revolutions on general principal. I was incensed at how Zion was depicted. It was basically a giant rave club with people spouting pseudo-philosophical bollocks. All it did was confirm to me that Cypher was right, and that life inside the Matrix would be preferable to the shitty real world.

The one thing I want from this movie is that they find a way to bring back Switch and do justice by them finally.

The first film never needed sequels. The first film felt revolutionary at the time, but it does not hold up well to history. It feels very much like a time capsule of the late-1990s, with the clunky explanations of the Internet, the techno and nu metal soundtrack, and the special effects which - again, revolutionary for the time - are kind of dated now. But it was at least a good movie. The second and especially the third (with its hamfisted Christ allegory) both felt like straight-up cash grabs and failed efforts to recreate the magic about what made the first movie so special and unique. I feel like a new "Matrix" starring Keanu Reeves in 2020 will be little more than a dark, sci-fi "John Wick," with an aging but unkillable Keanu just laying waste to henchmen left and right.

Agreed. Still hopeful but I can’t deny I got the feeling it’ll be more like 2 and 3 than 1. The first Matrix was lightning in a bottle.

I actually hope neither of them move. It's been a long time since we've had two monster films like this come out on the same day. Being an employee at a movie theatre I relish these types of release dates. Studios need to be more competitive in their release dates and not be afraid of one another.

It is times like this that I realize I am one of the few people that found all three Matrix movies to be over-rated crap. They just took some ideas from Philip K Dick and William Gibson, then took stuff that Hong Kong Cinema had been doing for years and somehow this was a huge hit.

What incentive is there in doing that? That's just a good way to cut into both movies' potential success. There are 52 weekends a year, just find one that isn't occupied and take it.

I feel like this is going to be yet another sequel that comes and drops with a thud. I feel like Reloaded pretty much killed the interest in the franchise given Revolutions flopped and there really hasn't been some great demand for more of it in the years since despite constant rumors of it. I don't care about these movies at all, but none of them flopped by any stretch. Reloaded was the highest performing at the box office, and Revolutions did almost as much as the original. Even Revolutions brought in almost 3 times it's budget. The quality of the flicks is up to the consumer, but all of them performed well at the box office.
