I need help. FAN.
Woke up Tuesday with a severe stomach pain. I thought it was just bad gas, so treated with Pepto and stayed home a day. Planned to return on Wednesday. Woke up with the pain very localized in my gut. Figured “OK, get through it, gas is stuck” Drove to work but as I drove, shifting from gas to break, I felt pain shoot through my gut. Arrived at work, called the family, told them to check on a doctor for me, see what could be done. Got seen at 1:15, after about three hours of work. Quick look over, recommended I get a CT scan at the hospital, just in case.
5:30, I get scanned. Less than ten minutes later, I’m in the ER being prepped for an emergency appendectomy. Woke up two hours later minus my appendix. In the hospital a few hours, then home. For two weeks to heal and recover.
So, here I am, somewhat mobile but limited. I hate being sick, partly because I feel I did something to cause it, partially because I’m a burden now. On top of it all, two weeks? That adds the other dark voice - will I ever get better, can I rise above this?
I know it’s a bit silly, but I miss being me. And I hate feeling so limited, so... weak. Any advice, thoughts, anything to help?

If you are sick and stuck, does that make you a stick?

If you are sick and stuck, does that make you a stick? Nope, just stuck.

I had my appendix removed 30 years ago. Took about 2 weeks to fully recover. Worst part was the day I had my appendix removed a close friend died. His services were 2 days later. So I went. Barely managed to make it but I had to be there.
Rest up. And take it slow.

Appendectomy is an out patient procedure these days? Apparently mine was pretty severe if I go from radiology to ER to pre-op to surgery all in about two hours, followed by a night in the hospital. Truth is, I still don’t have the details clear in my brain. But I’m home mending, that’s the important part.

yeah, just have to take it easy on yourself for awhile. I was down for about two weeks with bronchitis a few years back, it sucked, I could barely sleep for coughing and read or watched Youtube vids on my iPod touch in bed for the most part. Sounds like you're doing what you're supposed to, just try not to stress so much about the "whys" and feeling like a burden, we all need help sometimes, especially when you're sick/recovering.

I'd cut the jagged metal cereal O's from your diet.

I'm used to being the caretaker--been my job for 12 years in fact--so I know how you're feeling. It's really weird for me to be on the other end. Just try to remind yourself that everyone on earth needs help sometimes and an appendix going wonky pretty much strikes at random. Rest up, crack jokes about it and you'll be back in no time.

Thank you for this. We get so used to the need to be strong, to carry on in this world, we forget it’s OK to just be flat on out back not just physically healing, but mentally rebuilding. We could get into a long discussion on the importance of mental health as part of this, but... in any case, I’m getting a bit more active, which is good, but also recognizing that I have a ways to go. Not instant coffee the human body.

I'd cut the jagged metal cereal O's from your diet. “Better still, I GOT STITCHES!!!” Seriously, you’d be amazed how appendectomy has changed since that episode aired. I may have VERY small scars, but maybe none! Amazing!

I cried, calling out of work one time. The manager asked if I was crying, and I was like "uh...no???" Lol. I had a sinus infection and fever, and I usually try to avoid meds, but, as soon as I took it, I felt the fever break. The next day, I admitted crying when I called out. They said they knew I was sick, when I was complaining about my head and teeth hurting, when I'd left, the day before, and already had a backup cashier lined up.

Management who knows and cares are just happy we are OK. Friday, first day home from the hospital , heard a knock, limped from bed to answer and found a get well flower bouquet from my work. I sincerely hope this is all, otherwise when I get back, I’ll just be thinking “Don’t cry...” the whole time. Feel ya, I do.
