It was blown way out of proportion.
The reality is, those 2 guys made Milli Vanilli. Without their image/dancing, “Girl You Know Its True” would have never been a hit.
Look at Sia these days... she always has that little girl in her videos. Nobody bats an eye. But these two guys got brutalized for it.
Looking at the documentary, it’s really heartbreaking to see the way they were stitched up. Rob ended up taking his own life as a result of it.
Fab actually is a good singer. He regularly sings Milli Vanilli songs and after listening to them... I can’t understand why they didn’t just let him sing them in the first place. They barely sound any different. I feel like this sort of thing would be more accepted these days. If a band came out and had the same 2 regular dudes in their videos, it would just be seen as part of “the project” and not “Wow these 2 con artists had us all fooled! Strip them off their awards!”

Fact is, the very thing that they villainized Milli Vanilli for has become standard pop music practice now.
Talent is no longer a prerequisite in the music business. Can't sing? Autotune it. Can't play? Program it. Need to focus more on your dance moves than actually performing a song live? Lip sync it.
Music is a joke these days, and has been for a long time.

And at right around the same time, Black Box released the massive hit that was Ride on Time. They tried to convince us that a voice like that was coming out of this beautiful model when it was obvious to everyone that it just wasn’t the case. And then Loleeta Holloway heard the song and thought “that voice sounds familiar”. In a bizarre coincidence, when Ride on Time topped the charts in the UK, the song at #2 was Pump up the Jam by Technotronic and Felly. Felly however was yet another model brought in to lip-sync and appear in the video. The real vocalist was Ya Kid K, who was the featured artist on the next Technotronic single (and many others after). You missed another thing like that... Martha Wash (whom people might recognize looking more like this...) Helped make vocalists have to get properly credit and royalties due to things like not getting paid for that Platinum hit up there.

She had a few hits in the late 70's-early 80's (two with Sylvester- Dance (Disco Heat) and You Make Me Feel Mighty Real, one with The Weather Girls- It's Raining Men) before all of this happened between Seduction, Black Box, and C+C.

It's a pretty damned different situation. Exactly. Maddie Ziegler is a known dancer (from one of those Dance Mom shows; the other well known one is JoJo Siwa), but Sia's most certainly singing. After all, she had a few hits before Chandelier took off (Titanium and Wild Ones).

I didn’t mention it as it had already been brought up in the thread earlier. But yes, it was another case of an artist bring screwed over.

I’m not a fan of Frank Farian but I don’t blame him for everything. Morgan and Pilatus were informed right from the start that although they were supposed to be recording artists, when it turned out their voices weren’t strong enough, the versions released would be by session singers. They were happy to take the money given to them then and helped to carry on the facade. They did more than anyone else to perpetuate the lie. It’s easy to blame it on being young and naive but from everything I have read, they were fully aware of everything that was happening and they made the decision. Of course, it’s sad that Pilatus died but I don’t think Farian has any “blood on his hands” there. While I don't think he has blood on his hands, I think it's unfair to say they knew exactly what they were getting into. They weren't industry veterans, they were two guys in their very early twenties, who were offered a chance at fame and assured what they were doing was fine. Why wouldn't they trust Farian? He's done it before without backlash, he's made a career of it. When a young wrestler gets screwed over by a promoter, we don't assume they knew what they were getting in to. Wrestling history shows just how easily people can be talked into things by a charismatic promoter, look at what Heyman did in ECW to people with far more industry and life experience than either Fab or Rob had when they signed up with Farian.

They were told their voices weren’t good enough and were given money to pretend. What was there to not trust? Farian told them the situation, they may have been young but they still knew that they were essentially lying to the world. They may not have known exactly what they were getting into at the VERY beginning (before they went to record the songs) but when that changed, they agreed to lie. And did Farian ever actually lie to them about it? As far as I’m aware, once it was apparent they weren’t a strong enough duo vocally, he gave them the other option. They took it.

In an age of auto tune and lip syncing as the seemingly standard tv practice (and who knows what else trickery) all being an open secret I don't think anyone would care or bat an eye. You'd get some online mockery and meme material but outside of that there'd be no hub-bub.

Look at the response to Mariah Carey getting her vocal track caught in a loop at that Christmas event a few years back.

Must be fun to be told you are too ugly to be seen performing the song you sing.

Do you think he prepared them in any way for being made into pariahs or for finding themselves basically washed up and hated at 25? It's basically what happens with reality TV stars these days, manufacturing villains without fully warning the what life will be like with that sort of 'fame' and cutting them loose once they're on to the next thing.

Some of Britney's albums allegedly have the majority of the vocals done by a backup singer, not Britney. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but the information available suggests there's a reasonably good case for this one - it's a backing singer of Britney's whose voice is a dead ringer for hers, except the backup singer has a higher range than Britney's natural lower register. It seems like the producer blended some of Britney's (pitch corrected) vocals with the main vocal tracks done by the 'backup'.
As for why they'd do it? Who knows. It's probably cheaper and easier to get a backing singer in the studio than Britney, and would need less pitch correction.

Music has been a joke for a long ass time. There are genres of music where bad singing is treated like a feature instead of a bug. As long as you say you write your own songs and you touch an instrument, you can get fat on ooh wee cookies.

I don't think so. Guys with thick accents singing in perfect English would have about 100 YT videos breaking down how fake they are, then another 100 reaction videos. Those guys wouldn't last ten minutes before someone figured it out. That doesn't really prove anything. Ozzy Osbourne can barely string a sentence together, yet can sing in perfect English.

Plus, they did try to quit a couple of times. The first, Farian said they'd have to pay back thousands of dollars they didn't have, the 2nd time is when he went public with them being frauds.

Being honest I've never really understood the uproar over it. I mean, maybe it's just me but you're still getting the music, what's it really matter what the public face of it is? I'll say this: I felt for those guys. If someone came along to 19 year old me and told me that I'd have money, fame and women all over me and all I had to do was pretend to sing, I'd have signed that contract before you could blink an eye
