 Blame it on the Rain? Blame it on King Koopa! Man it was the most surreal f***ing thing when I saw this episode on netflix. I didn't know that SMB3 had an episode about Milli Vanilli and the bit where they're supposed to be performing is just replaced by an instrumental track. |

We're not quite there yet, but it seems to be less and less important to look like a supermodel in the music business nowadays, which is definitely a good thing.

I'm not sure if the comparisons to autotune and lip syncing your own stuff are accurate or useful.
Granted, this is before my time, but wasn't the issue here specifically that the public facing performers were not the actual performers in the studio?
I do think that who makes the music is a vital part of what makes a song emotionally connect to its listeners. You can have two singers with a similar style sing the same song, but there's still likely gonna be something that draws you to one over the other. And the problem here was that was unveiled as a lie, in a pretty brutal fashion.
There are definitely different levels of giving a damn about this for different genres though.

Based on current attitudes towards the music industry and performers, I'm pretty sure if a new group was caught lip syncing, half the reaction would be "And? Choreography is hard" and the other half calling critics "Haters" before the entire thing gets swept under the rug when a random comedian posts a picture of a car that looks like Steve Harvey.
The only way it would happen, is if it was an artist that was kind of annoying that the world has been waiting for an excuse to turn on. Like an Ashley Simpson situation, or when Amy Schumer did that movie about hitting her head and thinking she was hot. If Taylor Swift was caught, pretty sure the media would attack, and have no effect whatsoever to her bottom line.

I watched that episode on YouTube years ago and it also had the musical performance replaced with an instrumental. Has anyone seen the original version? I have to believe that is not how it originally aired. Also, that kind of looks like a dick on Rob’s pendent. |

Being honest I've never really understood the uproar over it. I mean, maybe it's just me but you're still getting the music, what's it really matter what the public face of it is? People can react very negatively to being lied to when they figure it out. That, and it being such an inherently mockable situation, made it easy fodder for mockery. |

I’m not a fan of Frank Farian but I don’t blame him for everything. Morgan and Pilatus were informed right from the start that although they were supposed to be recording artists, when it turned out their voices weren’t strong enough, the versions released would be by session singers. They were happy to take the money given to them then and helped to carry on the facade. They did more than anyone else to perpetuate the lie. It’s easy to blame it on being young and naive but from everything I have read, they were fully aware of everything that was happening and they made the decision. Of course, it’s sad that Pilatus died but I don’t think Farian has any “blood on his hands” there. While I don't think he has blood on his hands, I think it's unfair to say they knew exactly what they were getting into. They weren't industry veterans, they were two guys in their very early twenties, who were offered a chance at fame and assured what they were doing was fine. Why wouldn't they trust Farian? He's done it before without backlash, he's made a career of it. When a young wrestler gets screwed over by a promoter, we don't assume they knew what they were getting in to. Wrestling history shows just how easily people can be talked into things by a charismatic promoter, look at what Heyman did in ECW to people with far more industry and life experience than either Fab or Rob had when they signed up with Farian. Exactly. He took 2 young aspiring models from a night club, flashed dollar signs at them, and then didn't tell them exactly what they were in for until they'd already spent their advance on hair products. And if anyone says "wow, they spent thousands of dollars on cosmetics?", noone ever accused 20 year olds in a Berlin nightclub of being smart. |
