I'm a teacher and I have to go back to work on Tuesday, the kids don't come back until Thursday. Here in NYC public schools always started after Labor Day in September, but I know other parts of the country started already in Mid/Late August but let out in late May as opposed to Late June here. In college I did the Late August to Late May thing, and I think I prefer that. So what about you guys? When did you start/finish school and did you like that schedule?

Our city school system used to start the Thursday after Labor Day. This year they shifted to the Monday before Labor Day.

When I started 1st grade,1980 in MS,our first day of school was the Tuesday after Labor Day. And our last day of school was near the end of May. By the time I graduated in 92 our first day of school was august 22nd. And the last day of school for seniors was May 29th and 10th and 11th grade went till June 5th. It was a slow shift from us going back mid september and going back 3rd week of august. Only year we went really far into the summer was 3rd grade. Teachers went on strike for 2 1/2 weeks. We had to make up the days. So not only did we goto school on Saturdays, all we did was take roll call then play on the play ground until 230pm,but also lost spring break and last day of school was something like June 10th. My youngest started up this past Monday. And I think he gets out very end of May next year. I preferred how for about 10 of my school years we got 3 full months off from school. Once we started going into June and going back in August it made the summers seem super short.

Ideally the school year should be Labor Day through Memorial Day, everybody (besides HS regents teachers) check out.

I'm pretty sure before. The only thing I can recall about when we started here is it seemed we always started a week before week 1 of the NFL season. Back then the Redskins opened the season on MNF or played week 2 on Monday. But my dad always let me stay up to watch it. I stayed up on Monday's anyway for Prime time wrestling.

School always started before Labor. l use to start the day after the state fair ended until I was in high school st day was on the fifteenth of August instead of the last day of August. One year, the kids went back to school on the eighth of August...wow.

The day after Labor Day was a law here in Virginia until like last year.
I feel bad for the kids nowadays that have to go back to school earlier.

Where I went to school,MS gulf coast area, they havent gotten 3 full months off since 90 or so. But when I was younger a big reason for that was most of the schools didn't have AC and the last few weeks of August can sometimes be unbearably hot if you are not in AC.

Always before. I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure when I was young, it started like the Wednesday before Labor Day. Then it became the full week before. And then it went to two weeks before and stayed like that until I graduated. Yet our end date went from a couple days into June to a full week into June. No memory of the schedule for the ten years I worked there afterwards.
