I suggested on this board about a decade ago that the makers of The Simpson’s in way to evolve the show is to age all the characters 5 years. So Bart and his classmates will be in high school, Lisa and her classmates will be in junior high, they can do more with Maggie since she will be 7.
I know they want the show to be timeless, but three decades with no character evolution, constant retcons to back stories because of that has really made the show suffer. Plus the deaths of regular voice actors recently (Marcia Wallace, Russi Taylor). it’s time to just end it.

I can't recall the last time I saw an episode.

Eventually the core cast will be either too old to do the voice work or die. If they decide to continue until the sun burns out, I'd prefer if replacenent voice actors were cycled out every ten years or so (like superheroes and James Bond) I'd hate fot a be bad voice actor to slip in, and have us stuck with them for 30 years.

I don't think it will end any time soon, and I highly doubt a finale that tries to meet every fan's expectations could do that. Especially at this point with who they have writing the show.
But I'd be okay if they somehow convinced Matt to write a low key, Season 2/Season 3 a day in their every day life style episode for the finale.
I'd also be cool with them going real weird and bittersweet with the finale and leaning into the alternate life the Simpsons have taken on online. Though I doubt they have anyone savvy enough on their creative team to know about Simpsonswave and all of the fan made comics that exist and the melancholy Instagram accounts (like Scenic Simpsons), and the general self awareness the online fanbase has breathed into the Simpsons.

I caught an from a couple of years ago.. and I thought at first they recast the actor that voiced Marge and her sisters. Because Marge sounded so different.
But they hadn’t. Poor Julie Kavner her voice box must be so strained.

I'm not even really sure what you could do with any kind of status quo-breaking thing, given how many episodes they've done on speculative futures by now, some of which seem to potentially be in the same timeline of sorts, but often not.

Matt Selman’s episodes are still very good.

I always felt the final scene of the final episode of The Simpsons should be showing Ozzie Smith crawling out of the "Springfield Mystery Spot". And then Lou Brock makes a cameo and he accidentally falls into the hole. Ozzie says “oh my god!” *credits roll, one last cast picture* 1989-2020 Thanks to all of our loyal fans for letting us make you laugh

I think the last episode. They should do a remake of the episode Flaming Moe's. That'll impress the critics

I don't go out my way to watch it any more but still enjoy it and it can still be funny didn't one of the writers suggest the last scene be the first scene of the pilot, so the universe just goes in a loop This would be fitting, somehow.

The year is 2174.
The world remains a post-apocalyptic waste land, however a few things remain: Twinkies, cockroaches and The Simpsons.

Why is that show still going? Even though it’s not as consistently good as it was 15+ years ago it’s still better than a lot of what’s on TV.

The only way this show stops is when Al Jean croaks Fixed. A common misconception is that this is Matt's thing, even after 3 decades. Matt Groening pretty much stopped caring and became hands off around 2000 when Futurama was in production. In fact, by then, all three names you see at the intro (Matt, James L. Brooks, & Sam Simon) were practically out of the picture, though Matt & James show up from time to time for PR. Al Jean has ran this show for going on 19 years now.

I can't get mad at Al for the way he runs the show, because at his peak he gave us The Critic and many other great Simpsons episodes in the early years, and sometimes shows hints of the old magic. It's very much like fans reacted to Steven Moffat on Doctor Who...by season six he was well past it, but still capable of producing belters now and again. They were just few and very far between.

For me, it wrapped up in 2000.
Behind The Laughter is pretty much the series finale.
