This is a random late night topic, so bear with me. I stumbled upon an unsung James Brown classic, King Heroin. It blew my mind because it gave insight into the heroin epidemic in a way no other entertainment medium has, at least that I've experienced. The song really conveys the perspective of a heroin addict that hates heroin, sees with clear eyes how it has destroyed them, all while willingly reaching out for more. The lengths they must go to, the depths they have to plummet to, and what becomes the new normal for them, is a sight to behold. I think what the song accomplishes is that it shows the addict hates the drug just as much as the non addict does. The addict is shocked and despondent at what they've become, just as much as their friends and family are. It helps us to humanize them, I guess, in a way not even shoes like Intervention can do. I've been sharing this song with everyone in my department, only a few of them seem to understand why. Hope you all listen to it and if nothing else, enjoy it for just being a damn good song. m.youtube.com/watch?v=07SWjWaOxc4
