And despite that fantasy of doing the Mr McMahon strut and line delivery, I have very mixed feelings. I have recently been granted the title of supervisor and the owner of this facility has brought in a temp to fill my prior position. Only problem is-the guy is a slacker. He spends way too much time with his phone, he gripes a lot, and he has broken several pieces of merchandise , costing this warehouse money. I am particularly aggrieved because in the coming weeks we will be receiving a lot of deliveries as we prepare for the coming holiday season, and this guy just does not seem reliable. I feel the owner has e trusted me to make this call and if someone does not work out I should, say so, because crunch time is fast approaching. It’s not a fun call yo make, but I think I have no choice. Not sure what to feel. Gotta Tao that inner Michael Corleone I guess.

Do you think a warning might be enough to get him to get his shit together?

Can't let personal feelings get in the way.
Like you said, he's a slacker and has cost the company money which is also money not going in your pocket

If you don’t feel guilty having to fire someone then you have no business being in a position where you have the power to do so.

I’d say it’s time for some write ups. Playing around on his phone should be enough to earn one of those. Then he either gets his act together and starts working more productively or he feels slighted and flakes out even harder. I have a feeling it could be the latter, unfortunately. Many people would rather blame others for their situation instead of realizing they messed up and need to improve it themselves. Personal responsibility seems to be a hard thing for many people to grasp let alone own but self awareness is very important.

Speaking as a (I think) hard working employee, there is nothing worse than working with a slacking lazy co-worker. Fire them, all they do is piss off the rest of the team who are working hard and increase the workload onto the good workers.

You are absolutely giving it a lot of thought and thinking logically and soundly. Go with that. Shit’s not personal, and he sounds like a slacker.

How long has he had to learn your job?
He sounds like the type of guy that you need to drag around while you do your old job for one day, telling him point-blank what needs to be done and when, and how long he's got to do it. Tell him you want him to stick around, but that he's gonna have to step up if he wants a permanent position or even a passable reference for this one. Give him a chance to turn things around, and a reason to see the job as something he can build on. Not many young people come into the labour force with that thinking anymore, in part because employers are doing everything possible to make workers unnecessary.

Do you think a warning might be enough to get him to get his shit together? Given multiple already. He seems to think he knows better. Which is why I have mixed feelings-how much is his bad performance, and how much is my insult?

It's always a tough call, but just remember that at the end of the day you have a responsibility to do what's best for the business. If this guy has been warned and isn't showing signs of trying to improve his performance, firing him is the right thing to do.
It's also the best thing to do for both the business AND for him, as obviously it's not going to work out long term. The sooner you make the call, the sooner your company can hire someone better suited to the job, and the guy can find a job that he is better suited to.

As a fellow supervisor, if you've given them chance to turn it around, and they're still doing nothing about it, get rid of them.
9/10, slackers are slackers not because they need the job but their parents have made them get one. If he needed the job, he'd be doing his best to impress in a attempt to be kept on.

I was a warehouse manager for sixteen years. Firing people was probably the most stressful thing I had to do. I hated it every time I had to do it. But sometimes it has to be done.
When a new employee is brought on, there is usually a probationary period (often three months). All you really have to say is ,"It isn't working out" and let them go.

Which is why I have mixed feelings-how much is his bad performance, and how much is my insult? As someone who’s had warnings in the past and used them as motivation, I’d say he’s had enough chances. It only took one for me to improve, as it highlighted the severity of the issue (in my case it was underperforming, not a behaviour thing). Let him know that it’s nothing personal, but highlight the prior warnings, say they’ve not worked and you’re left with no alternative. Good luck, bud - I don’t envy you.

Just challenge him to a match where he puts his job on the line and get one of your co-workers to do a run in. Simple.
