If you base your decision on whether to be a firefighter or not on the mascot and having Sam as mascot puts you off then you shouldnt be anywhere near a fire.

Its hilarious reading the comments on some of the places I went too on Facebook, people are using the term snowflakes etc but there is just no comments of people disagreeing with them on this issue
I think the majority of "snowflakes" never cared or give any thought to him being the mascot

Is this going to be one of those stories where the people involved think most people get really offended by these things except the only thing you find is that other people get really offended by the decision to remove said thing and everyone else is surprised there are even mascots for this stuff at all?
I’m leaning towards “Yes”

If you base your decision on whether to be a firefighter or not on the mascot and having Sam as mascot puts you off then you shouldnt be anywhere near a fire. True, but in a discussion way bigger than we could have here, firefighting is seen as a very "guy" job, so a lot of people will just have that view growing up and women who would be capable won't even think about it, unlike say, the police or medical fields, or even the army, which has it's own vaaaast array of problems but at least is trying to change to be more inclusive to a degree. Changing that is something that needs effort from a young age so there is a point to making things more diverse from as young as possible. The series did bring in a female firefighter so they could have gone that route, they've just chosen another. Given these kinds of stories, I think pretty much any change that promoted diversity would have gotten a similar reaction.

I'm honestly surprised that it's still a thing, given how Sam is owned by Mattel these days. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being down to royalties more than anything, with the brigade choosing to use characters they own, but not wanting to say it's cost cutting.

I'm not familiar with the character, but it seems like you could just change the name to Firefighter Sam, have a female counterpart who's kept equally prominent in promotional stuff, and solve the whole perceived issue.

I’m leaning towards “Yes” My reaction was "there was a mascot"? Of course, in America, our mascots are animal based since we believe kids respond to cartoonish creatures better than actual people in costume telling them to do the right thing.

One fire service made an internal decision not to use the character as a mascot. Even as someone who watched and enjoyed Fireman Sam as a kid, I'm like... What's the big deal?

Today is the first time I ever heard of Fireman Sam, so my reaction to all this is "ok." I'm guessing this story is SQW-bait in order to get them outraged about something insignificant.

It's one of those Outragebait stories circulated by tabloid newspapers and social media as something we should all be furious about. 'Oh my goodness, has political correctness gone mad?! A local firebrigade has changed their mascot for reasons I do not like! I shall loudly pretend to believe that it was incredibly important to me personally and is a sign we are going down the road to madness! Someone get me some smelling salts for I feel quite faint, and open the Daily Mail's comment section!'
In the grand scheme of thing, it's not important and they should have dropped him as a mascot when he was bought by Mattel years ago, most people likely thought he had been, I know I did.

I've also found this is proof people don't read the articles, the amount of people I saw who thought the show had been outright cancelled was ridiculous
