It's coming up to the 20 year Anniversary of Starrcade 1999. This is famous for Goldberg ending Bret Harts career. The poor guy had finaly been made WCW champion only a few weeks before (the time Hogan took time off, coincidence?) And then this happens 😬
But what do people think of the match as a whole, where WCW try to redo the Montreal screwjob 🙈 and the full card. Tbh I can't even remember anything about the rest of the card, it's all very forgettable can anyone else ?

I watched the match for the first time about 7 or 8 years ago. As I've said here before I checked out on WCW in early 98 so I knew zero about any of the angle surrounding the match. I only knew this match basically ended Bret's career. First time I saw the finish of the match I was shocked by the stupidity of it, but hey, this is WCW 🤷♂️. I watched the entire event for the first time last year with a friend as a watch along with the What Happened When podcast, because there's just no way in hell I'm watching 1999 WCW as a serious wrestling product. In the 9 or so months since I've watched it all I remember was a Benoit vs. Jarrett ladder match that was okay at best. Benoit could carry literal shit to a decent match and that's what he had to work with in this match Shit Jarrett. Speaking of shit, that's exactly what I've always thought Goldberg was in a wrestling ring. So imagine how I feel about him ending the career of my all time favorite wrestler due to his own uncoordinated clumsiness. F*** you, Bill Goldberg. Then. Now. Forever.

I remember ordering the PPV (yeah I know), I didn't think anything of the kick at the time as Bret would wrestle for a few more weeks after this, including a rematch with Bill the next night and a hardcore match with Terry Funk a week later.
The screwjob finish was awful and I'm not sure why Bret would even agree to something so stupid.

It’s sad it ended Bret’s career but in the end I don’t think he had much left to offer. Bret was just another cog in a poorly run machine who probably would have just dragged out the next couple years like everybody else.

The damage was less with that particular kick and more with Bret continuing to wrestle and take bumps afterwards, which led to more concussions and issues in a short amount of time. The last match of his full-time career was a hardcore match against Terry Funk on Thunder, for crying out loud.

Ironic, considering Bret was Terry’s hand picked opponent for his own “retirement” match like two years prior.

Ah, Starrcade 1999. The show that gave away the top two matches away for free the very next night.

Not quite, he did wrestle Funk (and Tank Abbott) but his last match was with Kevin Nash wcwworldwide.com/2017/04/bret-hart-last-wcw-match/

This wasn't his actual last match, as said above, but it is my earliest memory of seeing Bret Hart wrestle. He was just gasping for air the entire thing, not making any facial expressions. I remember him being put in a trolley and rolled down the ramp. What a depressing f***ing match that was. And on Thunder???

OT, but to me, this is always one of the start of the final nails in the coffin for WCW.
You put on what is probably the biggest match you could do at that point, on your biggest show of the year, weeks after WWF just lost their biggest star, and your average ratings for the month fall.
The final blows are losing Hart and Goldberg to injuries plus the Radicalz jumping ship.
