Oddly timed tweet from Gail >_> This belongs in the Birds of Prey Harley Plus Girls thread, because that's 1,000% what she's referencing. Glad to see a writer from DC finally side with the readers on a shitty movie adaptation. Beyond tired of Jim Lee sucking up to every DC movie that comes out.

What amazes me is how every time I read it, the twist with Ozymandias is still so visceral. “I did it 20 minutes ago.” Then panel after panel of horror.
Bubastis without the squid ending is just a random weird cat.

I too still don’t understand the significance of the pirate story.

I too still don’t understand the significance of the pirate story. The entire story is an allegory for Ozymandias and his actions. It isn't truly apparent until the final chapter when he's having his conversation with Doctor Manhattan and is telling him about how he truly feels the pain of every life he has taken. He says something like "I keep having this dream where I'm swimming towards..." or something like that and then cuts himself off.

And it shows how in a world with superheros there isn't a need for superhero comics. So pirates are the big genre in comics. It is odd I love the comic but also love the movie. Sure the film changed a few things. But here is a film I had been waiting on since 1987 and I went opening night. Came out of the theater very happy. I have always wondered how the comic would have been if Moore had gotten to use either the MJL heroes or the CHarlton Action Heroes like he wanted to.

One of the interesting tidbits I remember is that they made much of the fact that a copy of Watchmen was always on set to ensure authenticity. The fact that they missed so much of what was in there though makes me think they were more just worried about copying the art. I am curious if the extended edition would work any better. Does it have the pirate stuff? I suppose the pirate stuff wouldn't be as meaningful with the ending in the movie.

The pirate stuff is in the extended cut, so it's even more jarring for it to cut to animated back and forth. And while you can do that on the page, it really looks weird on film. It'd be like if they occasionally had a text crawl of the background text pieces.

The director's cut is the best version I think.

The thing I liked about the Ultimate Cut is the supplemental stuff. There's a featurette on there that's filmed as if it's a 60 minutes style show in the 70s where they interview Hollis Mason, Sally Jupiter etc. It's great.
Sadly I got rid of the Ultimate Cut in favor of the director's cut when I switched to blu ray&that featurette isn't there
