Near 70 year old guy that doesn’t keep up with pop culture, let alone the current WWE product, trying to keep pace with two 30-somethings?I know you may not be a fan of his, but Lawler's love life isn't really any of our business.

He's sucked for 20 years. Even when I go back and watch old stuff from 2000 (my favorite year), his commentary is terrible - especially during Eddie/Chyna matches.

Jerry Lawler should join Terry Funk, Paul Orndorff and Larry Zybysko to start a new OAO stable and invade RAW.

Jerry Lawler should join Terry Funk, Michael Hayes and Larry Zybysko to start a new OWO stable and invade RAW. Are you on the good stuff? If so, who's your dealer?

If you listen to his podcast, Lawler is still a genuinely funny and insightful dude, but the guy just doesn't have it on commentary anymore.

I thought him saying Flair’s team was “lit” was amazingly awful, but other than that, I didn’t find him too overbearing or anything.
There were a few moments where I thought Vic Joseph was Michael Cole until he started talking.

Combine standard Vince-approved WWE Overbearing Heel Commentator tropes with Lawler being terrible for years on end during his last stint. And you've got a recipe for disaster.

If it's going to be only temporary, then Lawler was fine. Vic and Dio were getting more confident and able to hold their own as the night wore on; if they get into their groove sooner rather than later, they'll be able to let Lawler go back to...whatever, sooner.
The challenge is getting the energy behind the commentary to a) sell the in-ring stuff, b) sell the importance of what's going on and c) the PPV or event where the _really_ important stuff is supposed to happen.

Byron can do that perfectly He can switch between doing lead and falling back into Color plus he always has energy. He has low key been good for a little while compared to his rough start

I think the last time he had a genuinely good line on commentary was when he said Punk couldn't electrify a fish tank, but I agree. He's basically been shit for the last 20 years.

I know Cole and Graves have talked down to him since the beginning of time, but when he finds those few moments to talk about the match, I’ve found him pretty good.

Or how he sold the moment perfectly being the cheerleader for Kofi and how you can hear the emotion in his voice when Kofi won the WWE title at Mania

This is total conspiracy theory here, but I can see Vince doing it on purpose for a few reasons.
1. to haze the new guys (alpha male b.s.) 2. to haze the new guys and see if they'll stand up for themselves (have a backbone / alpha male b.s.) 3. to not let the two new guys get comfortable so the commentary sounds awful and Vince can say "see we tried it this way and it didn't work, back to the way we were doing things that worked much better" essentially sandbagging something he's against, which he's known to do, and somehow not realizing that he's doing that.
But this could also just be King not giving a shit.

Near 70 year old guy that doesn’t keep up with pop culture, let alone the current WWE product, trying to keep pace with two 30-somethings? Yeah I don’t know who forced that upon Heyman but I can only imagine he either went in deaf or was before the show was over. No, I think Heyman had an idea here to have a veteran commentator with Legend status accompany the millennial play by play and color commentators. The idea was that Lawler would let a bit of credibility to the announce team while Dio and Vic got comfortable on the big stage. It's very similar to the dynamic of AEW's announce teams, where JR and Schiavone are there as legendary announcers almost the entire audience knows and respect while Excalibur, Marvez, and Goldenboy grow into their roles and gain their own reputations. It wasn't as seamless as Heyman would have hoped because Lawler is still Lawler in both his good and bad attributes, but they were much better during hours 2 and 3 than they were in hour 1.
