I don't mind them taking liberties with the characters appearances from the source material. Hell, I was begging for this from Wonder Woman as I didn't think in a million years that her classic look could ever not look ridiculous in live-action (praise be to Patty Jenkins). But while I don't need or even particularly want loyalty to source material, I do expect some respect for it. None of this feels like anybody involved in the movie had any respect for Birds of Prey and just went "who cares what they look or act like, they're not Harley!". That's kind of where I am with this. Even an updated version of their costumes would be find. Hell, Black Mask doesn't even wear a black mask!

Eh, but that'd be a historical recounting or something, I'd get some annoyance at that; these are fictional characters, they get reimagined all the time. I guess it'd even be something I'd get if it was a case of there being one "canon" presentation for each character; like, I think back to when the Lord of the Rings movies came out and I loved seeing things put on screen that so resembled the art and descriptions from Tolkien's work, since those are the singular sources for those characters ad locations. But with comic characters there have just been so may retellings, elseworld stuff, new lead artists and writers, etc., that I'm basically open to whatever someone wants to do, so long as the end product is decent. That's why though; just aesthetics. The only difference in say Rings and comics thing you're describing is degree and semantics. I'm not precious about it either way, but you asked why some are. That's why. Haha. Hell, the Bakshi cartoon of Rings was wildly different in some respects and people love that just as much. Just depends on what ya like. There's no one canon there either. Well, again my point with Rings was just that it has a singular source, relatively speaking, so I kind of get people having an expectation for appearances, whereas comic characters tend to go through changes all the time. With Bakshi's take on Rings it kind of came off differently from a lot of the art associated with the books, but personally speaking stuff like that doesn't bother me; I totally get a fan getting a kick out seeing a classic outfit they love appearing on screen, but ultimately I just can't bring myself to care too much about deviations, again, so long as the end product is good, and I personally always found Bakshi's Rings to be ok-yet-flawed, but not because of things like choosing to put Boromir in a viking helmet. That said, if it's a case of just flat-out not liking the aesthetic choices or finding them lacking in general? Yeah, different story, that's all personal taste and perfectly understandable. I just don't really care too much about source faithfulness, particularly when there are so many different comic adaptations out there already that have the characters looking or interpreted any number of ways. Still, the film could suck, regardless, wouldn't be the first time for a modern DC movie. I thought the trailer seemed pretty fun and I get why they push Harley so hard, so I'm cool with giving it a shot, but anything's possible with DC movies over the past half decade or so.

They should've just made this a Gotham City Sirens movie. At least Harley was actually involved with that.

Rashomon was already about unreliable narrators, though. So I have to assume it’s going to be one story told from various viewpoints and not told in chronological order? Or maybe the Pulp Fiction comparison refers to gratuitous swearing and a drug overdose?

D..do they not know Rashomon's whole gimmick is that it's unreliable narrators? Because that's the way it comes across in that phrasing.

Honestly, looks like it could be really fun. Not necessarily good, but fun. Still a little bitter about not getting a proper BoP movie, but at the very least they seem to be a pretty spot on modern Harley. I’m a lot more optimistic then I had been, that’s for sure. Probably won’t watch in theatres, but am definitely checking it out at some point now.

So is Joker supposed to be in the truck that crashes into the fireworks factory? I wonder if this'll be one of those from the back body double shots with Mark Hamil doing the laugh?

Canary Cry! Black Mask's mask!
Looking forward to this, it looks like it's just gonna be a lot of fun.

I'm sure I'll eventually watch this, but it still looks kinda terrible. I guess it's cool to see Black Mask and Huntress looks great, but everything I've heard about Birds of Prey turned me off from wanting to see it in the worst way.

Is the plot still Black Mask sending dick pics to Zaasz which end up in a diamond shaped storage device which is swallowed by Cassandra Cain?

This looks... absolutely unbearable. Like I can tell that as presented I would be bored out of my mind watching this because it seems much more like a sizzle reel of wacky set-pieces than any sort of cohesive narrative.
