How is Shadow a clone of Sonic?

This thought just genuinely hit me over tea with my family; I used to be a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan when I was in my pre-teens until I was about 16 years old. I don't know how I didn't realise this sooner, but I think the official backstory for Shadow was that he was a clone of Sonic created by Gerald Robotnik, Eggman's father. 

But Shadow is 50 years old or something like that, right?! That means Sonic is even older because he had to have come first for Robotnik to base Shadow off of him? Now, I might be getting my wires crossed, but that's how I've always heard it, Shadow being a clone of Sonic, which would make Sonic well over 50 years old.

I don't know why I'm overanalysing a detail that doesn't matter in a game about a running blue hedgehog; but I am.

I don't believe they said Shadow was a clone of Sonic. There's some speculation that Gerald Robotnik saw the mural in Hidden Place Zone (from Sonic & Knuckles), believed it was a prophecy, and thus deliberately made Shadow a hedgehog to eventually fulfill it, but Sonic had nothing to do with it.

If Shadow is a genetic relative of anyone, its Black Doom, because the latter's blood was used by Gerald to help create him.

If anything the implication in 2 at points seems to be that Sonic is some later model of him somehow (what with stuff like being able to use Chaos Control), but then they just never explored that further.

I really feel like there's nothing wrong with Shadow as a character at all?

He has depictions where he's been used poorly certainly - he definitely fell into a rut of just aimless angst from Heroes until Sonic Battle - but I feel like he's one of the very few Sonic characters who has anything resembling a character arc and he's probably the most interesting part of Adventure 2's story. They definitely should've left him dead for storytelling reasons but I really don't see any real reason to dislike him beyond a years-long grudge over a spinoff that, while it's not good, didn't really harm anything (and really it isn't even that bad).

You wanna call someone out for being a shit edgelord hedgehog with no purpose beyond to mooch off the popularity of existing characters I'd point at Silver. And honestly I'd say Shadow adds more to the series with his continued presence than the, "Sonic's whiny coward idiot friend," and, "That guy who keeps showing up to never actually do anything because tradition," ruts that Tails and Knuckles have been stuck in for well over a decade.

Shadow has the same problem a lot of Sonic characters have in that he outlived his original story purpose, but was too popular to get rid off, thus he just kind of hangs around now. Its not too dissimilar to Knuckles whom even Sonic team have given up in justifying his presence in games without the Master Emerald. This would be fine if they were like the Mario cast who are largely there to fill out the sports titles, but given that Sonic is supposed to be somewhat character and plot driven, it just leads to a lot of characters who are hypothetically important but don't actually do anything.

They were out of most of the color ink so the printer defaulted to black, but it still had a little red and it made those streaks you sometimes get when that happens.

I view Shadow as a way better character than... most post-Sonic Adventure characters. Yeah, the spin-off didn't help, and Sonic 2006 especially didn't help, but he had a pretty interesting story arc from Adventure 2 to Shadow the Hedgehog.

Really in general, I disagree that Sonic can't have more in-depth stories. You're already throwing realism out the window with a blue hedgehog who collects rings and runs fast; if you've got a story to tell that's good, just go with it.
