I found this old thread about it elsewhere: wrestlingclassics.com/cgi-bin/.ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=122571;p=0I remember Verne briefly mentioning this the Spectacular Legacy of the AWA. Going by that thread and elsewhere it always seems like that was kind of Verne’s out to avoid admitting failure. If Verne was less of a promoter and more of a pure businessman he probably would have ended the AWA much sooner and avoided mortgaging the land/develop the land for great profit.

Yeah, this falls in the same category as "WCW was killed by the AOL merger" and "Mid-South went under because of the oil crisis". It might technically be true, but if the company was actually worth anything at that point then it would've never happened.

It's a bit like a gazelle being mauled by a lion, but somehow escaping, then succumbing to an infection from the wound. Sure, the infection did it in, but it had been weakened immensely to allow that to happen.

Old Yeller AWA already had rabies, the govt domain claim was just the shotgun behind the barn.

Verne being greedy and being permanently stuck in 1972 killed the AWA, it was just a slow death.
The irony of it all is that Verne had plenty of pieces on the board to be where Vince is now if he'd not been greedy and stuck in the past.
