Today at the World Tag League finals, former IWGP Jr Champion and Luchador Dragon Lee appeared via video and announced that he was now going by the name of Ryu Lee.
This comes after he was fired from CMLL three months ago

As I mentioned before, it’s a hell of a power play from NJPW. Basically stating that yes they want to work with CMLL, but they consider themselves the more powerful one in the pair.
Really happy to see him back though. Best of the Super Juniors was amazing this year and he was a big part of that. His match with Ospraey was phenomenal.

Probably a better name anyway, which is funny given it's basically the equivalent of if Test had shown up in TNA named Quiz.

They have said the relationships still exist with CMLL and ROH. Booking him with a different name and not just Dragon Lee like AAA did may either be for peace, or Lee's own doing, given CMLL supposedly doesn't even own it or RUSH, the woman they ousted does, so there's jack shit they could do about it, anyhow. Makes me wonder if RUSH has a name change of his own coming, if ROH is going to placate CMLL too any.

But NJPW choosing to continue booking Lee definitely sends the message that they consider CMLL the minority partner given the bad blood between CMLL and Lee. Like I said though, very happy to see him back.

It's interesting that they doubled down on their deal with CMLL recently shown from their Fantasticamania announcements, but are doing this, surely against their wishes.

I don't know if it's necessarily a doubling down; New Japan is undoubtedly the partner with leverage in this situation, just as in their arrangement with ROH. By still doing FantasticMania but then also signing Lee, they've very much put the ball into CMLL's court, doing everything they still want to do and leaving their business partner to decide if they want to raise a stink or want to keep their heads low and let them get away with it. CMLL can call them on it and strain the relationship--and their locker room--or they can bow their heads and just take it on the cheek. New Japan wins either way. Much the same way New Japan doesn't have Honor Rising on its schedule, didn't send anyone for excursion, and has their US shows using more indie workers than ROH, New Japan is testing what they can do and pushing in, letting the promotions they're partnered with call them on it while being in no positions to call them on it because of what those connections get them.

Yeah, it's a pretty bold step by NJPW given the partnership, but CMLL really has no space to say no. Even with the ROH side of the relationship, ROH has Rush as champ and is booking Ryu Lee a lot, yet they've still had CMLL guys on shows as recently as the past month or so; I think the new people in charge at CMLL might be figuring out they've put themselves in a bad spot, and their partners are kind of letting them know it.
Good for Lee, though; dude clearly wants to be in Japan and is probably going to have a great run. Having him locked down and Hiromu back likely means Ospreay moving up to face heavyweights more often.

What does CMLL really bring to the table when it comes to NJPW? Why would NJPW be afraid of them when booking Lee?

What does CMLL really bring to the table when it comes to NJPW? Why would NJPW be afraid of them when booking Lee? A reliable place where their young lions on excursion can gather tons of experience working multiple times per week? Access to otherwise difficult to book Mexican talent that the Japanese crowd seems to like/love?

Access to otherwise difficult to book Mexican talent that the Japanese crowd seems to like/love? And with New Japan going to America and AEW's partnership with AAA growing if you want to build a roster that can go out there occasionally, no harm to get some CMLL talent on there too.

And CMLL also provided Naito with a place to go when he was searching for how to rehabilitate his character once his Stardust Genius run lost steam; it was there he initially joined Los Ingobernables in the first place. Having alliances with places like that gives NJPW talent a chance to go and work elsewhere, whether to keep fresh, to appeal to a new audience, or to try out new characters/in-ring ideas.

They extended the Fantasticamania tour adding more talent than before, unlike ROH, CMLL still has Kawato on excursion and they talked of sending of more New Japan talent to CMLL shows at the Fantasticamania announcement in Mexico. As far as ROH, Global Wars was not done with New Japan but CMLL last fall and now Honor Rising has been cancelled. To me it feels like New Japan is saying we are using Lee, whether you like it or not, but we are willing to give you more in return and keep building our partnership. Basically it's on CMLL to screw the relationship up, although New Japan certainly wants to keep it going. ROH on the other hand, really seems to be on the outs with New Japan offering them next to nothing. The only talent they have been regularly using from ROH, as of late is Jeff Cobb and that feels more like a courtship to get him to sign with them.
