But turned out to be much better than expected.
What are some matches that you can think of that would seem poor given the participants, but actually put on a decent showing?
Undertaker vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania XXVIII: I wasn't too excited for this match, especially with what happened the year prior. However, their showdown at Sunlife Stadium inside a Hell in a Cell changed all that. The crowd was even on their feet for the whole thing. It also helped that I was there live. Triple H was hell bent on ending the streak, but The Deadman refused to go down without a fight. Shawn Michaels, another victim of the streak, was the special referee in that match. Undertaker ending up winning the match and afterwards, all three men hugged as a sign of respect.
Trish Stratus vs. Stephanie McMahon at No Way Out 2001: A not yet fully trained wrestler in Trish Stratus verses a non-wrestler in Stephanie McMahon certainly isn't a technical masterpiece by any stretch, nor did it need to be. The storyline headed into the PPV was fueled with drama. With Stephanie's father Vince demanding a divorce from Linda and then putting her in a nursing home(and being sedated), The Chairman had Trish Stratus filling in her shoes as his main squeeze.
However, according to Stephanie, there could only be one dominant female in the WWF, and she took exception to this resulting in a match between the two. Given the drama going into the match, there was alot of catfighting and hair pulling, though there was also actual wrestling into it. Another wrench thrown in there was William Regal not knowing which side to choose. He ended up performing the Regal Cutter on Trish after being slapped, and dragged Stephanie on there to get the three count for the win.
I'm sure there's more I can come up with, but I can't think of at the moment.
Any that come to mind from you guys?

Dunno about bad, but a Shimmer title match between Madison Eagles and Jessie McKay (now Billie Kay) seemed like a ho-hum match to me. Billie Kay's more recent work seems to have her pegged as a good character who is not so great in the ring, so it may actually look worse on paper these days.
It is easily one of my favorite matches of all time, with a picture perfect face/heel dynamic, some of the best selling I have ever seen, and a thoroughly well-paced and well-worked mentor vs. student story.

Big Show and Sheamus
That match has no right to be as good as it was

Both of Nia Jax and Ronda Rousey's ppv matches. I'm not a Nia fan at all and I was completely indifferent on Rhonda during her entire run even though she was very good for the short amount of time she wrestled but for whatever reason these two had amazing chemistry together.

I thought Mero/Sable vs. Goldust/Luna at WM14 was going to be a giant turd and was 100 percent wrong. All four of them brought it, the crowd was hot, and the way they built the match made Sable look like a goddamn hellcat badass in a way they never were able to replicate ever again.

Nash vs Triple H in a Sledgehammer Ladder Match in 2011 sounded like it'd be a total shitshow but I wound up thoroughly enjoying it.

Baron Corbin vs. Kalisto had no right to be as awesome as it was.

Cena vs Great Khali ended up actually being quite good.
Not like he's been someone that'd tend to be written off as awful, but I feel like all of 2019 Lance Archer (Lance Hoyt) would qualify, as he REALLY rose to the occasion, and in quite arguably the most star-studded and varied G1 tournaments in years, he managed to get a ton of buzz for himself.

So since this is the (w)Rest section, I'm going to put down one from the indies for a show this year.
Kings of the North vs. British Strong Style six-man tag for the OTT Tag titles from ScrapperMania 5.
On paper, it doesn't look that bad but it's more the connotations around it. See, the Kings had been the tag champs for a long time, pretty much beating every challenger in front of them to the point where it got super dull. One of them being a 3 vs. 2 War Games style steel cage match (the Kings having a 2 on one disadvantage as the heels) that didn't make much sense for a variety of reasons I won't get into right now.
So whilst the rest of the card was forming and fans wanted More Than Hype to challenge again (they did at Fourth Year Anniversary where the Kings cheated to win), this match was announced the day before the show and had the "Loser Leaves Town" stip thrown on top because, well, British Strong Style were a part of NXT UK, Dunne and Bate were soon to be going to NXT proper so it made sense to have them go out in a blaze of glory regardless of the fact it would mean the Kings have beaten everyone and there are no challengers in a rapidly depleting UK scene.
Then the match happens...and it's f***ing incredible. Crazy brawling all around the National Stadium, occasional member Dunkan Disorderly dived off one of the entranceways onto everyone else, some great near falls, just generally super nuts.
And then British Strong Style won. And the place explodes. Outside of Devlin finally beating Walter, there wasn't a pop like it all night. The Kings, in canon, were gone from Dublin. Bate and Seven were OTT Tag team champions. Like, maybe I'll watch it again and pick it apart a bit more but being there for that was magical.
So it went from my least anticipated to one of the best matches of the night in one motion.

Cena vs. Umaga at Royal Rumble 07. I wasn't interested in this match at all, I wasn't a fan of Cena and Umaga hadn't convinced me yet. But this match was really great.

Hogan vs. Vince at WrestleMania XIX was far better than it had any right to be all things considered.

Some of the hosses back in the day could really work. They didn’t need to wor with Flair, Steamboat, Hart, Michaels, etc. either. Case in point Bossman vs. Earthquake at Albert’s Hall is a really entertaining match.

The Big Bossman and The Barbarian had a match, I wanna say it was Rumble '91, that looked like pure crap on paper but ended up being a shockingly good, hard hitting hoss fight.

Undertaker vs. Batista at WM. I remember how everyone shit all over it when it was announced on these boards. It ended up being one if not the match of the night. By far one of Batista's best matches.

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, SummerSlam '02.
HBK had been inactive for 4 years. Hunter was 2002 Hunter. Everyone thought it was going to be a chore to get through, and that it was a street fight was seen as covering up that neither could work anymore. Plus, you know, Reign of Terror HHH who'd only let his friends in the higher card.
Well, needless to say we were proven wrong that night.
