So yesterday I was at a gamers expo and I bought some games. One of which being Outlaw Volleyball for the Xbox. I know that I also have the PS2 version, which actually came out later and had two extra stages and one extra character (Which I remember reading was DLC for the Xbox version; man, I wonder how DLC worked during THAT time). You're probably wondering why I bought the downgraded version from the one that I already had. Well, it was cheap. Second, the Xbox version had the custom soundtracks feature. So it was cool to listen to the music that I have on my Xbox.
This was far from the first time that I have double-dipped, by the way. When it comes to DVDs, there was a time when movie companies would distribute the theatrical version and director's cut/unrated version separately, rather than on the same disc (some even had both movies on separate discs when it came as a two-disc set). Wrestlemania 23 is quite possibly the only example of double-dipping with wrestling DVDs. The reason being is that while I have the three-disc edition of WM23, I later bought the Blockbuster-exclusive edition, which has exclusive content on the second disc. I think that version is rare. I mean I remember there being a two-disc bare-bones version with it just being the card and the second disc being John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels. The Blockbuster version I think is pretty hard to find.
Regarding games, however, I did the same with the GTA games for the PS2 and the remastered versions for the PS4. I don't see a reason to hold on to GTA V for the PS3 when I have the PS4 version (I know that there are some differences, though). I know that the Xbox versions have the custom soundtrack feature, but unless I really want to hear my own music on the game, I think I might pass on those versions. Plus, I still have the original PS2 version of Vice City, which has the dialogue intact regarding the Haitian/Cuban storyline.
What are some examples on your end?

Oh my yes. When I was collecting dvds I would often double dip. I bought a Swedish copy of the New York Ripper and like a month later... they announced a new nice blu-ray edition. I double dipped with the Beyond but that took a longer time between purchase and new blu ray.
While not exactly a double dip I was dumb enough to purchase Arkham Knight on PC (for around $15) and a couple months ago it was free on PS Plus. I read about the issues with the pc version and I thought I'd be lucky avoiding those issues, nope.

Played my copy of De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising CD so much that the disc couldn't really play anymore. When the double disc remastered re-release with all the b-sides, remixes and outtakes came out, I double-dipped.
My rule with DVDs was always "are the extras long enough to qualify as another feature film." So like, with Basket Case or the umpteenth Army of Darkness re-release, the answer was yes.

Plenty. Offhand between me and my brother we've owned Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube, PS2, Wii, PC, 360, and PS4, and I've thought about it on the Switch.

Owned TCM(original)4 formats now,own 3 dvds of it.
Both both dvd releases of Return of the living dead and the blu ray and kept them all.
Got both MGM releases of Last House on the left dvd and then that arrow blu ray set.
Many many more dvds I own twice or more on DVD then at least once on Blu Ray.

I too have double dipped the chip.
I had the Mad Max anthology, then decided I wanted the set that included the black and white edition.
I still have Silent Hill 2 and 3 for PS2, as well as Robotech Battlecry, but I also bought the Silent Hill HD remasters as well as Battlecry for the Xbox.
I had the various Sherlock Holmes collections, but bought them again collected in a gorgeous leather bound Barnes and Noble edition.
I've also bought updated, more definitive editions of various movies over the years to shore up my physical media collection.
I'm on the fence about buying the first ten Star Trek movies on Blu Ray, to replace the Special Edition DVDs. It would save so much room, but damn those special editions are meaningful to me.

I try not to. When I moved across the country for college in 2006 a bunch of my stuff was put in storage or kept for safe keeping by relatives. To do this day I still haven't seen a bunch of that stuff as the relatives probably either threw it away or "lost" it. So that stuff I don't mind re-buying since I've given up hope on ever seeing it again.

Shortly after it came out, I asked for the WrestleMania 20 year DVD Anthology as a birthday gift and got it. Apparently there's an alternate version of the set with WM21 & WM22, but those 2 are encased in a smaller CD-case shaped case, instead of the DVD-case shaped case that 1-20 are. I found that 21-22 case on sale at a used DVD store 2 years ago and decided to buy it, despite the fact that I already owned the full 3-disc releases of both WM21 and WM22.

I can't count the number of times I bought a movie on VHS, then dvd, the blu ray.
And now I don't own any and watch them all digitally.

I have owned Sonic 2006 on Xbox 360 and PS3 multiple times in multiple periods of time. I probably have one now lying around someplace.
It really is no use.

Buying multiple versions of the same piece of media I already own seems like a waste of money to me. It has to be something really special to justify the replacement. Or the original I have is broken.
