Who would you say the best voice for Mario is, Lou Albano or Charles Martinet. Have to say Albano, and no it's not childhood nostalgia (outside of Albano's performance, the show barely holds up), it's just that Albano's voice has a blue collar charm that I always associate with Mario (not to mention that he's actually Italian). Martinet does have a more childlike glee to his performance, but at times he sounds like a children's pizza commercial.

No love for Peter Cullen in Saturday Supercade? ;-)
Gotta go with the Captain. Again more subtle Italian, more working class. Plus I'll go to hell before I die if I don't vote for him.
(as a spinoff, does that include whoever did Mario in SMB3 and SMW? As he tried to sound like Albano?)

I don't really think it's possible to compare them given one was actually, like, acting and the other just makes random sound effects. Not saying that's an easy thing to do or anything but it does make it pretty hard to gauge the quality of the performance beyond just how you feel about the voice.

I'll go with Martinet, because he can be fun when he's allowed to do more than just a few words. Have a look:
Plus, you have to give respect as he's been voicing Mario for over 20 years now, where Captain Lou, while I respect the work he did, was only about a year or two in the role.
Though the big question is what that Mario movie that Illumination is making will do with him.
