Buy me Bomberman Act Zero or go to hell. Young man, in this house we use a little word called "please". Boy, Japanese developers sure had (and probably still have) low expectations for American gamers, thinking all we wanted were grimdark shooters set in dystopic metallic hellscapes.

At least they never took Bomberman in a wildly different direction again.

Remember Atomic Bomberman? This looks like if they took that game and made it super gritty.

This prompted me to play Super Bomberman 1 again, and it's still fun, but a lot easier than I remembered. Once you have a few power ups you can basically clear out any level within the opening invulnerability period.

What's particularly bizarre about this game was that it was a realistic reboot done when the game series was still fairly relevant with its usual art style. Bomberman Generation had come out on the Gamecube a mere four years before and traditional titleswere coming out on the portable consoles all the time. Heck Bomberman PSP came out literally three weeks after Act Zero's release looking like this: The Bionic Commando reboot may have been dubious with its aesthetics, but at least the series hadn't had any major releases in 20 years and was trying to introduce itself to a new audience. Act Zero had no excuse.

I remembered that this game was mentioned in a thread from about a few years ago, which talked about the trend of "new, improved, and full of attitude" or "new and extreme" versions of media and trying to be all hip and stuff. That was more of a 1990s thing, especially in the mid-to-late 1990s. This game came out in 2006, I believe, and this was even around the time of when Batman Begins came out, as it was showing a dark and grittier take on Batman. Funny I'm even mentioning that, because the comics can be dark, trend or not.
