When you like a show or a movie, you often recommend it to others. You want to share that movie with others because you liked it and believe that some might like it, too.
However, there are times when you like something, but you don't feel that someone else would like it the way you did. Sure, in the end, it's possible that the friend might share the same feelings towards that form of media if they end up watching it. But then you also have ones that even though you liked it, it's hard to recommend, whether it's depending on subject matter, elements of the movie that might be a bit much for someone to handle, or maybe it's because you admit that the movie wasn't all that great but you still enjoy it.
For example, I know an old friend of mine is a huge fan of Vanessa Hudgens. I liked Spring Breakers, but I wouldn't recommend it to him. I am sure that he wouldn't understand it or would be bored by it, or just find the whole thing ridiculous. I liked the movie because of its odd storytelling and also James Franco's performance. It also had some good visuals, even for a movie that was low-budget.
I also could say that I sort of enjoyed Gummo, but I wouldn't recommend that movie to anybody. Not only would they not get it, but there were a lot of weird things going on and the way things were presented, it was almost like watching a series of clips and you try to pinpoint what on earth you were watching. Then again, it could be said about some movies from Harmony Korine (I haven't seen a lot of his stuff, but I would watch some of his films just for the sheer curiosity of it all).
There are more but I just can't think of any. If I remember some, I will list more. What are your examples?

Synecdoche, New York is overwhelmingly depressing in a way I've never seen before. Extremely good, though.

"The Stupids". It's a comedy that's stupid. But even for people that know that going in, it's about a 50/50 chance still that they find it funny.
Also, to piggyback on your friend's Vanessa Hudgens fandom, I watched "License To Wed" because Mandy Moore was the female lead. But it was mostly marketed as 'another funny Robin Williams romp' because, you know, he's one of the other lead actors. It's simultaneously considered "Mandy Moore's funniest comedy film by far" and "Robin Williams's least funniest comedy film by far".

Elephant by Gun Van Sant is simultaneously a disturbingly serene and poetic portrait of a school on the day of a class shooting that I really appreciate... while also being a drawn out & repetitive art film that might as well have "pretentious bulls***" written on a 3x5 notecard as its treatment. I enjoy it, but could so easily understand why someone would be bored out of their mind watching it.

Employee of the month (2004). People forgot it even existed due to the Dane Cook movie of the same name that came out like a year and a half later and I don't think it managed a theatrical run, but I loved this dark comedy. It was the kind of brutal comedic movie that would become very popular later on with things like Kick Ass and various James Franco movies. It had Matt Dillon in it, even.
But the tone, overall grossness of some material and off-the-wall plot twists coupled with people always being confused what movie I'm trying to tell them about makes it hard to recommend.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
If you don't know his other films previous to it, you'll be lost as f*** as to what's happening.

First that comes to mind is “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford“. Cause it’s pretty slow and most would probably find boring. Lots fit into that mold like “The Revanant”, “The Wrestler”, both Blade Runner flicks.
Then there’s the extreme other end stupid flicks like “Kung Pao: enter the fist”, “Dude, where’s my car”, “The Hangover” flicks, etc

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3.
It's a bad Ninja Turtles movie, but I like it as a cheesy martial arts movie that happens to have the ninja turtles in it.

Full Metal Jacket. It’s an incredible film, but man, it’s really heavy.

Just want to note that by publicly stating your fondness for a film, you are inherently recommending it.

Any Woody Allen film, not only because the man himself turned out to be a rotter but they're an extremely acquired taste, if you hate them you're going to REALLY hate them.

Van Sant’s Last Days (a fictionalization of Kurt Cobain at the end of his life) was in the same vein- not too bad, but not for everyone obviously.

Just want to note that by publicly stating your fondness for a film, you are inherently recommending it. I get that. But the point I was making was that there are films that you may enjoy, but at the same time, you can't see some others enjoying it the same way you did. I had addressed that in the OP.

Scott Pilgrim.
I loved it, and it seems to have a big cult following, but most people I recommended it to thought it was terrible and too weird, so I don't recommend it anymore.

I can't argue with you on this. The movie does have a cult following, but not everyone out there would be able to understand it. Being that I mentioned Spring Breakers, I guess I could mention a lot of the movies distributed by A24 are hard to recommend. While that production company is known for arthouse/indie films, and a lot are good, some wouldn't quite get them. Then again, I have been meaning to watch "Under the Skin" and "Enemy," both of which you really need to get what you're watching, from what I had heard. I can also talk about movies that are deemed bad, but still enjoyable. Some have asked me why would watch a bad movie intentionally.

Scott Pilgrim is a niche movie, so I'd recommend it to nerdy types who'd get all the video game references. It's also an amusing who's who of seeing which actors in it would go on to much bigger and better things like Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Chris Evans. Though the ending sucked compared to the graphic novel is was based off of, though I blame that on the ending of said graphic novel not being written yet at the time of the movie's production.
