Christmas Story is one of those things where I totally get if people are sick of it or never liked it, but there are still bits I really like. Ralphie's mom is actually one of my favorite movie moms.
Also, I hate Ovaltine ads with a passion, so the movie speaks to me.

Didn't TNT and TBS both run it for 24 hours this year? Yes. They’ve both run the 24-hour marathon for at least the last 3 Christmases. (The marathon has been running on at least one of the two networks for the past 20+ years.) As both @jdogindy and @ricrocket alluded to, this marathon does great ratings. How is Dynamite doing compared to what TNT was usually doing before AEW debuted? Not sure of the exact numbers (I’m sure they’re out there for anyone who cares to dig for them), though I believe it’s doing pretty well. But yeah, that’s more of an apples-to-apples comparison. 24 Hours of A Christmas Story does great for Turner, but it’s a once-a-year anomaly, & won’t be much of a factor in determining AEW’s future.

Yeah, it's definitely not relevant to it, it's its own separate beast.

Is A Christmas story a big deal in America or something?
It’s not something most people in the UK are even aware of existing let alone being a big Christmas film, seeing it do such big ratings is crazy to me.

I've just never gotten the appeal of Christmas Story. I find it cloying and a bit irritating. That and the central plot point of "You can't have a BB gun because it is dangerous" is a fairly logical thing for a parent to say.

It, along with probably Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, would arguably rank as the top 3 Christmas movies in the States in terms of pop culture in recent years. I’m just talking feature-length films, not including hour-or-less TV specials. (Of course, there’s some subjectivity in any list like this. But I was trying to consider factors like pop culture influence, broadcast positioning and merchandising.)

Watching A Christmas Story at least once is a Christmas tradition for me and I don't even celebrate Christmas.

One thing I appreciate about the movie is that, IMHO, the dialogue is more realistic than in most movies, especially the kids’ dialogue. Yeah, the kids can be a bit whiny at times (so can real kids), but I can see where a kid’s life would feel momentarily rocked by not being able to put his arms down or fear that Dad is gonna kill big brother for getting into a fight. And Mom is right there, nurturing while managing all this small-scale chaos. And in large part, for those of us who do like it (I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea), I think the chaotic realism is a big element of A Christmas Story’s appeal. There are all these side stories going on, such that even though the BB gun is nominally the central storyline, it’s really in the background for much of the movie. And real life is a lot like that—a lot of intertwining things going on all at the same time that make it difficult to focus on one thing for very long.

Good point about the BB gun storyline being in the background for much of the movie. The first couple times I watched it I got caught up in Ralphie's fights, school paper, accidentally cussing and changing the tire. So when he finally got the gun I was like "Oh yeah, he did want that BB gun". Lol

They did show the AEW Christmas commercial during the movie, so they at least got their name out there to any casuals or lapsed fans.

Isn't the reason they have that marathoned throughout Christmas is because it does great ratings? A Christmas Story is a huge draw. Correct. They found out ages ago it was better, in terms of ratings, to run it all day instead of airing it even just a few times spread out across the day with other holiday themed media sprinkled in.

The story behind the why it does big ratings is actually kind of silly. Mostly nobody ever had anything on for Christmas since no one watched TV, but certain movies did have decent spikes, (classic Frosty, Rudolph, Christmas Story and the like). Since there's no counter programming, people would watch, and then it occurred that you could just leave one of these big movies on all day and people would watch it in parts, since it's a very "scene"-focused movie. It's like a series of connected vignettes that can be watched out of order. Much like It's a Wonderful Life, it's almost a purely manufactured American tradition by sheer force of saturation. It's on all the time, so you watch it. You've seen it a billion times since you were little so it's nostalgic. It's nostalgic, so you like it. And on it goes.
Elf's gotten the same treatment and seen its stock as a Christmas movie rise in the same manner because of it. Back when that movie came out, it was far from a big deal as a Christmas film.

A Christmas Story is very much nostalgic Americana, so I'm not surprised it isn't that popular there. It's like the Christmas version of The Sandlot.

How is Dynamite doing compared to what TNT was usually doing before AEW debuted? from what I recall from posts from the early days- TNT was hoping for 500k viewers from AEW and that whatever was on before was around 300k or so. so even with the lower numbers they're still outperforming expectations (except for the xmas show- that 0 viewers probably pulled the average down)
