#95 - Slumdog Millionaire
*HBO
It can be a bit too coincidental and far-fetched at times. However, there’s more than enough in terms of story, cinematography, acting, and writing to make this a fantastic movie. [****½]

75. Blood Freak (YouTube) I watched this on YouTube but the out-of-sync audio and whacked out video quality really didn’t deter from the movie at all. What’s the term? “Polishing a turd”? Speaking of “whacked out”. This movie is far out man. Some guy smokes one joint (it’s never really clear what it is) and gets hooked then eats some turkey that the guys he’s working for have put some experimental additives in (At their request) which reacts badly to the drugs he’s on and turns him into a turkey monster that’s addicted to blood. The acting is just as good as you’d expect which adds to the beauty. And the sound effects! Dear god the sound effects. That scream! That scream and “the song” are going to stick with you for the rest of your days. The girls are all so damn hot. It’s too bad there’s no nudity. The girl who plays Ann is so far out. But what’s really too bad is it’s not as violent as you’d expect. What violence there is is really awesome but a movie with a concept as crazy as this has should be crazier. The way the turkey monster drinks blood is incredible. I could watch that all day. Even though I’ve seen it now and know how terrible it is I’m still going to buy my own copy of this movie on DVD or Bluray. It’s always really expensive anywhere I see it and it’s not worth fifty dollars.

Southland Tales - watched it for the first time in about 13/14 years and it's still a mess of a movie, I thought back then. It's no misunderstood masterpiece or anything like that, but I oddly like it and I don't know why but I think at least part of it is some of it's scenes (like Justin Timberlake musical number lip synching Killers' All These Things That I've done), it's an hodge podge of a cast too featuring Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Wallace Shawn, Seann William Scott and a bunch of SNL alumni including Amy Poehler, Jon Lovitz, Nora Dunn and Cheri Oteri as well as Will Sasso (it's not a comedy... or is it? I am really not sure what Richard Kelly was going for here). I wouldn't recommend it even though I said I oddly liked it.

45. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) 46. Sammy, the Way-Out Seal (1962)So this not the next Netflix arrival I talked about in my last post. That DVD arrived damaged and now I'm waiting on Netflix to send me the replacement. So with me not being able to watch that, I decided to jump back into Weird and Obscure Disney+. According to the Disney Wiki, this is a "telefilm" (no idea what the difference between that and a made-for-TV movie is) that aired as a two-parter on whatever Disney's network anthology show was called in 1962. It's about two boys, who while vacationing at the beach, find an injured seal. After fixing him up they sneak him back with them to their home in the suburbs. Realizing they need help, they make the ultimate sacrifice and ask an icky neighbor girl (played by a young Ann Jillian) for help to use her pool. Shenanigans ensue as the three kids do all they can to keep the seal, Sammy, a secret from their parents. This all climaxes with Sammy leading a massive uprising of all the neighborhood dogs, destroying the local supermarket, in what I can only assume was his first step in his plan for world domination. Fortunately that's avoided as the kids realize they need to return Sammy to the beach where they found him so he can reunite with his seal girlfriend. One of the weirdest parts of this movie is that they tried to portray Robert Culp (who played the boys father) and Jack Carson (who played the girls father) as old college friends, despite the fact that Carson is a good twenty years older then Culp and looked every second of that twenty years. This was actually Carson's, a prominent comedic actor in the 1940's, last acting role before his death the following year of stomach cancer. Cute animal, adorable children, wacky shenanigans, utter chaos in the climax. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect in early 60's family entertainment. If you're into that then this is for you.

#96 - Anna and the Apocalypse
*Prime
It’s awesome when I find a movie online and fall in love with it. I was sold on this within the first 20 minutes. Combining a zombie apocalypse with a musical is a fun concept and this movie totally nails both aspects of that genre mashup. [****]

16. *batteries not included - a fun little movie about alien robot spacecraft thingies that come and help out the residents of a New York City brownstone who are getting evicted. It would be a timeless classic if not for the one guy with the awful 80's hairstyle.

45. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) 46. Sammy, the Way-Out Seal (1962) 47. The Karate Kid (1984)So I've meaning to re-visit this ever since Cobra Kai started up, just never got around to it. I don't think I've watched the first Karate Kid movie since I was a kid in the 80's. I've seen the second one a handful of times since, but it's been at least a decade since I last watched it. I don't think I've ever seen the third one and I know I've never seen the fourth one (and I DO plan on watching the fourth one). So this is another one of those 30-something year old movies that everybody knows about and has already seen and I don't really know what more to say about it. Well, other then that midway through I swear to you Paul Heyman shows up.

#97 - Iron Man 2
*Disney+
I feel like there was a lot of potential in this movie, only for it to get bogged down by the villains and some of the plot points. Had they focused on Tony’s drinking and impending death, which was a high point for the movie, I think it would’ve worked better. Those scenes, Don Cheadle, Downey being great again, and everything involving Natasha Romanoff was strong. [***]

76. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan *USB* I don’t know why I like this one so much more than some of the others. The change of scenery is nice, especially when Jason makes it to Manhattan. For the most part the kids all get enough screen time to make me care. The kills are creative. And it has Kelly Hu, who is my Friday the 13th waifu. The only bad thing is “young Jason”. That’s terrible. And the one teachers perm. That’s worse.

46. Sammy, the Way-Out Seal (1962) 47. The Karate Kid (1984) 48. The Karate Kid Part II (1986)I've always liked this movie better than the first one, and this re-watch has only confirmed that opinion. I just feel it has a more mature story then the first ones "impress the girl/stop the bully" plot, even though when you get down to it this movie is basically doing the same thing. But I guess the higher stakes make the difference. I also like that Daniel beat Chozen basically the same way you beat Don Flamenco in Punch-Out.

An incredible film. Pixar delivers what is one of their best movies thanks to gorgeous animation, a gripping story, really creative ideas, and some outstanding emotional moments. Every time I watch this, I like it more and it's already pretty perfect. [*****]

64. Last Dance (1996) - Watched this on Blu Ray. I know I haven't been watching that many movies lately, mostly because I've been playing video games and writing as well. Anyway, brief history lesson, I remember seeing a trailer for this in front of Mr. Wrong (Yes, the movie with Ellen Degeneres; it was around that time, maybe it was something else). What stood out was Sharon Stone in a prison suit, but I finally watched this tonight, as my mom bought this Blu Ray from Dollar Tree years ago. So I thought "why not?" Anyway, I felt that this movie was a bit underrated. The lead guy, Rob Morrow, he has range and he was pretty likable in his role as the attorney trying to give Sharon Stone's character appeal from the death penalty. I could see that Sharon Stone was trying, but I wasn't exactly feeling the accent she was trying to pull off. But I liked the dynamic that Morrow and Stone had. It was a pretty overlooked film. I think part of the problem that it gets a bunch of crap is because Dead Man Walking came out the same year and that was given a lot of praise. Though I still need to check that out. Maybe I'll do it soon.

77. The Wizard of Gore *DVD* This was kinda hard to watch. The acting and editing were pretty damn bad. But the gore itself was pretty repulsive. So I loved it! The gore was off the charts in this one. The spike in the head scene was especially nasty. Even though the head looked so fake hair grosses me out. So when it got all mixed with blood and brain matter I felt a little squeamish. And when he started gouging our the eyes was really nasty. Even though it was such an obviously fake head. The guy who plays Montage the Magnificent is...well, magnificent. Especially when he breaks the forth wall. It gave me new respect for Crispin Glover playing the character in the remake. If there was ever a role perfect for someone it was this. Some of the extras are so bad though, kind the laughing waitress at the beginning. But maybe she was laughing at all the plastic wrap they had put on the floor to protect the carpet from all the blood. And the overall story is pretty bad. Why are a sports columnist and a daytime talk-show host the doing investigations? Not that completely out of their elements doing all the work has never happened in horror movies. And once the real cops get involved it becomes quite apparent that randos are better doing all the police work. Whatever. This was so cool.

47. The Karate Kid (1984) 48. The Karate Kid Part II (1986) 49. The Karate Kid Part III (1989)This is definitely my first time watching this one and I can see why it is so maligned. It almost feels like a parody of the first movie. Terry Silver is so over the top as the villain that he was almost impossible to take seriously. I did like Mike Barnes though. There was a weird magnetism in the way he was able to quickly go from zero to psycho. I wish he was given something better to work with. The entire movie leads up to a final fight that plays more like a final Rocky fight then Karate Kid, where Daniel's job is to just get his ass kicked for 90% of the fight and keep getting up. Then in the end it becomes Guardians of the Galaxy, with Daniel winning the fight by challenging Mike to a dance contest. This just wasn't good. Oh well, sometime over the weekend I will finally watch The Next Karate Kid, which introduced the world to the true star of the Karate Kid franchise, Hilary Swank.

48. The Karate Kid Part II (1986) 49. The Karate Kid Part III (1989) 50. Little Nicky (2000)So there really are only two Adam Sandler movies I think are any good, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy. Well, technically three, I also like Airheads, but that's not really an Adam Sandler movie as much as it's just a movie that stars Adam Sandler. But Little Nicky has always been kinda on the borderline for "good" Adam Sandler movies. I remember it being very quotable and having some memorable moments, but also being kinda tedious at times. But I don't think I've watched it since college, so I figured it was due another watch to re-evaluate. Earlier this week I discovered that it was being shown on MTV2, so I decided to DVR it. For those who are not regular viewers of MTV2, they do love their commercial breaks. Little Nicky has a 90 minute run time, and they manage to stretch that into two hours and twenty minutes with commercials. And they chose to stick one of those breaks right in the middle of the "Rock You Like a Hurricane" scene. WTF?!?! They also blurred Kevin Nealon's head boobs. And yeah, my opinion of the movie didn't change much. It had several funny and even awesome moments, but those moments never came together to make a whole. This isn't the worst Adam Sandler movie, but there are better ways to kill 90 minutes (or two hours and twenty minutes). Also, as a NYC Transit employee, I feel I should point out that in the year 2000 there were no K trains running on the IRT.

#99 - Bombshell

Thanks to an intriguing true story and some stellar acting from the cast, especially Margot Robbie, this movie mostly works. However, the muddled narrative focusing too much on Trump in the early stages holds it back from being great. That’s not the story I came here for. [***½]
