75. Noelle
My kids have been making fun of the fact that in almost every movie we have watched over the past month, one or both parents of the main character have died as a plot point. So anyway, we decided to watch this silly movie about Santa’s daughter who has to save Christmas after SANTA DIES!! It is actually a fairly funny movie if you can get past the whole “men are all stupid, lazy chauvinist pigs who can’t do anything without a good woman backing them up” theme that runs through the whole movie.

593. Scrooge (1935) – I already said I'm a sucker for A Christmas Carol adaptations and this was the first sound one, that seems a bit forgotten, obviously it follows the same formula as any of the other adaptations but there was a few times I found myself more emotionally invested then some other versions and would probably say now Seymour Hicks is one of my favourite people to play this role. (****)
594. Heartbreakers (2001) – in a similar vein to movies like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I honestly liked this better then I though. I thought Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt played well off of each other and there is enjoyable roles for Gene Hackman and Ray Liotta. Not sure why this needed to be over 2 hours long though. (**1/2)
595. Jojo Rabbit (2019) – this could end up being one of my favourite films I've seen for the first time this year. Funny, sad, great performance and some inspired music choices (any thing that uses I Don't Want To Grown Up by Tom Waits is A-Ok in my book). Loved This. (*****)
Christmas Films I've seen for the first time order of preference (Films I've watched in December only)
1. Scrooge (1935) 2. My Christman Inn 3. Last Christmas 4. Christmas With The Kranks

I know there's nothing special about the plot or the performances. That's okay. This movie is just so much fun, even if not everything holds up years later. I crack up laughing almost every time. [***½]

332. Parts of the Family (original version) *DVD* A bank robber takes the wrong damsel hostage. Firstly, I labelled this “original version” because Troma released two versions of this movie on this DVD. This, the original version and their own reimagining of the exact same movie. I don’t know what that means really but I’ll find out tomorrow night when I watch the other version. This version starts out pretty f***ing boring. It’s mostly a thriller that takes a long time time to get going. The only real positive to the first half was Cecilia Bergqvist being topless for most of it and she is F-I-N-E FINE. She’s even topless in the menu clips. Then at around the 50 minute mark the tone gets turned (as do the tables) and it gets good and crazy. As does Cecilia. The zombies show up and the real “meat” of the movie starts up. It’s a lot like how From Dusk ‘til Dawn completely shifted midway but not quite as extreme. I mean when I watched that movie when I was younger I didn’t even usually watch the first half. This I would (and will tomorrow) watch the first half again. It also really reminded of those Kiwi gore movies like Dead Alive even though this was a Danish/American co-production. The second half is some great low-budget zombie fare and it makes up for the first half being slowerish and not what I really wanted to watch. What exactly is going on is never explained really. No rituals or anything other than Cecilias character being a nut. But when has a lack of explanation ever stopped me from enjoying a zombie movie? It was made it 2003 but the low production values make it look like something from ten or fifteen years earlier and that really worked in its benefit. As do Cecilia Bergqvists boobs. I’m really looking forward to seeing the other version tomorrow.

227. The Castaway Cowboy (1974) 228. Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) 229. The Great Outdoors (1988)So I've been wanting to watch this movie for awhile now (don't think I've seen it since the 90's), but for some reason or another I would always just miss it being on. Finally I DVR'd a showing of it on the Logo Channel. I thought Logo was for gay and lesbian programming? Do they know something about this movie I don't? A little disjointed at times, the animosity between the two families just seemed to elevate out of nowhere towards the end, but a mostly fun old 80's movie.

There's fun to be had with the darker premise and some of the action scenes are well done. Charlize Theron is a delight, while Chris Hemsworth is strong but I didn't love Stewart's work here, even though I've become a fan of hers lately. The script is kind of messy as well, as is the pacing. [***]

333. Parts of the Family (Tromatic version) *DVD* So the post production team at Troma decided to have some fun with Parts of the Family and edited their own comedy version of the movie. They added their own newscast footage and some monkeying around with the original version. A lot of it is really self-deprecating and funny. They rip the movie and themselves apart. The repeating of the guy slapping the girl when she’s handcuffed to the bed made me laugh every time they did it. I’ve never seen the show but I’d imagine it’s pretty much what MST3K is like. Thing is I really liked the original movie so I didn’t think it needed to be ripped apart but it is what it is. If I watch this movie again I’ll stick with the original.

Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) John Hughes and Howard Deutch team up again after Pretty in Pink to deliver essentially a gender-swap remake, though with a different outcome. None of the traditional Brat Pack actors are in this. Instead, we get Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Lea Thompson.
Even though it's very familiar, it's still a pretty good movie. I can see why it's not as popular as the other John Hughes teen movies, but it's still good. The three leads are good.

596. Fear and Desire (1953) – Stanley Kubrick's first film in which he later called “a bumbling amateur film exercise”, I think he's probably a touch harsh on himself because there is some moments worthy of his work here but some of the acting lets it down and een though it only comes in at like 65 minutes, 5 of those minutes could easily be chopped off.
597. Merry In-Laws (2012) – George Wendt plays Santa and Cheers co-star Shelley Long his wife in this made for TV movie where there son gets engaged and the fiancee arranges a get together so she can them, and it's alright when it remains lighty and frothy, but once it tries to be at all dramatic it falls apart. Kills 90 minutes though
598. Surviving Christmas (2004) – I think I may have seen all the great Christmas movies out there by this point because this was another bad Christmas movie choice this year, Ben Affleck hires James Gandolfini and Catherine O'Hara to be his family at Christmas and it just doesn't work and the ending just feels really unearned
Christmas Films I've seen for the first time order of preference (Films I've watched in December only)
1. Scrooge (1935)
2. My Christmas Inn
3. Last Christmas
4. Surviving Christmas

I hit the 200 mark today. These are also Lifetime Christmas movies and I watched them via DVR.
200. Merry Liddle Christmas - So I basically recorded this and found out that there was a sequel (which I will get to), I decided to check this out. Okay, I have stated in last year's thread, as well as parts of this thread that I have a thing about TV movies, especially Christmas ones. This is no exception. Kelly Rowland (yes, of Destiny's Child) plays a woman who hosts Christmas for her family coming to her house for the Holidays. Of course, there is always a guy involved and it's obvious what will happen. That wasn't the only thing that was predictable, as I saw some things coming from a mile away. But still, these types of films have their charm and I still found myself enjoying it. It was also a nice touch that Kelly Rowland provided some songs for the soundtrack.
201. Merry Liddle Christmas Wedding - The sequel, which debuted this year. I am glad that I watched the predecessor first. This film got almost everyone back, as well as additions to the cast. So this one was about the couple that came together at the end getting married, and it was a destination wedding, too. Like before, some hijinks ensue, but everything works out in the end. Also, like before, Kelly Rowland provided some music. She even had a nice little number in one scene.

If you enjoyed the first movie, this sequel should fall right in line. It has almost identical strengths and weaknesses. A good time, but not much more. [***]

334. Violent Shit
*DVD*
Jennifer wrestled her friend playfully to the ground in front of the snow cone stand and began licking at the girls eyeballs, as if they were sugar cubes. Their bodies convulsed and flailed with an almost seizure like intensity. At times their pale limbs seeming to shift back and forth from one torso to the other. A crowd gathered almost immediately to watch these two girls tie and untie their bodies like a pair of pit-vipers. They were confused, or concerned, or shocked, or aroused, or all of the above. But no-one dared interfere with the performance. Jennifer's long ashen hair hung down concealing the girls face like a curtain around a hospital bed. No one had any idea that the girls eyes were revolving under her ruby tongue.
"This is disgusting, it's pornography" exclaimed a pasty slug-like woman in a fur coat, vanilla ice-cream smeared across her double chin like a money shot.
Countered a balding professor type in his mid-forties, his left hand stuffed crassly down the front of his pants
"No, no, no. This is beautiful, this is art."

599. Noelle (2019) – it's odd that this is not even the first Disney movie where Santa Claus had died. This film mostly gets by on the charm of Anna Kendrick because it's missing something to make it truly magical, I liked it enough overall though.
600. Godmothered – another Disney movie. Which premiered on Disney+ earlier this month and it reminded me a bit of Enchanted (which was better), even though I didn't mind this but like Noelle it's missing that something too especially here when it fails to reach it's emotional peaks. This and Noelle are still among the better Christmas movies I've seen so far this year though (given how bad some of the others are)
and that's it 600 films so far this year

#347 - The Karate Kid Part II
*Vudu
This sequel tries to bring higher stakes but it ends up feeling too campy with all the talk of fights to the death. The ending antagonist is really lame and that hurts things. Plus, there's not enough karate. At least Morita was good again. [**½]

335. Messiah of Evil *DVD* I’ve watched so much off-the-wall, brutal, extreme stuff the last few weeks that going back to a 1970’s giallo-ish horror seems almost boring. Or maybe it’s just my realizing that I don’t really like giallo made this bore me. This did have some cool stuff. The albino man was really f***ing cool. The mood and atmosphere of the whole movie was really good but it never delivered. A lack of gore, a lack of nudity. I think it may have even been rated PG-13 and I’m wondering now what made me decide to buy the DVD? If it had of been a part of one of those multi-movie sets I sometimes buy I’d probably have enjoyed it more than having spent $16 on this.

601. Anna and the Apocalypse (2017) – finally another Christmas movies I really enjoyed! A British made zombie musical which uses Christmas as the backdrop, really got behind the characters I'd be raving about this a lot more if the songs where more memorable but still comes recommended from me.
602. Carry on Camping (1969) – Barbara Windsor passed away and I wanted to watch something in tribute of her. I'm not sure how these movies translated to other countries (including America) but I have such affection for these movies, most of these films are dirty humour in the way that something is said that sounds dirty and the characters react (“I need help erecting my pole!”), this is one of my favourites of the film series (31 movies), and Babs as arguably the most iconic scene in the film series here when her bikini top accidentally flies off.

1. Scrooge (1935) 2. Anna and the Apocalypse 3. Noelle 4. My Christmas Inn 5. Godmot 6. Last Christmas 7. Surviving Christmas 8. Merry In Laws 9. Christmas With The Kranks

228. Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) 229. The Great Outdoors (1988) 230. Magic Camp (2020)I take another step closer to the end of Weird and Obscure Disney+ with this, something I've never really checked out before, a Direct-to-Disney+ movie. Actually that 2020 date is probably a bit misleading, as apparently this was ready for a theatrical release in 2018, but for some reason kept getting pushed back until Disney just decided they were better off dropping it directly onto streaming. Two main stories happening here. We have Theo, a shy but talented 12 year old card magician who's still getting over his father's death, being sent to the titular Magic Camp run by Jeffrey Tambor. Theo gets placed in the "Hearts" bunk, with the assorted misfits and screw-ups that usually populate movies like this, run by story two, Adam DeVine, a washed-up former star student of the camp who's career crashed and burned after breaking up with his old partner/ex-girlfriend. Through the course of the movie, with Adam DeVine's help, Theo and his loser bunkmates get over their insecurities and discover their hidden talents (while dealing with bullies and crushes), performing a successful show at the end of the summer, while Adam DeVine re-ignites his love of magic and grows as a person. Watching this movie the only thing I could think was "this is exactly what Harry Potter would be like if Harry Potter took place in a world without real magic". Jeffrey Tambor was Dumbledore (with a bit of Dr. Khan from Salute Your Shorts thrown in), Theo was Harry, his bunkmates took on the qualities of Ron and Hermione as necessary, etc. The competition between Theo's bunk and the bullies bunk felt like a straight up Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry. I can't think of an exact counterpart for Andy DeVine's character in the Potter-universe, but then again I've only seen the first two Harry Potter movies and remember almost nothing about them. Otherwise this was fun but paint-by-numbers tween appeal movie. About on par with an above-average Disney Channel Original Movie, but with better production values. Adam DeVine was charming in his obnoxious and arrogant way, the kids were good, and special shout-out to young Isabella Crovetti who stole every scene she was in as the slightly psychotic animal-enthusiast magician. But yeah, this was probably best off not getting a theatrical release, I can not see it making its budget back in theaters.

#348 - The Princess and the Frog
*Disney+
This has the warmth that you want from a Disney movie but lacks the great songs and memorable moments to really stand out. [***]
