OK, I was part of a discord RP server, since my real life is pretty boring and RPing, for me, is no different than playing video games, it's an escape from reality into being things and people who are just bigger or cooler than you are. I was on this server on Discord and the owner remarked to someone who was annoying them. 'Are you autistic, you seem autistic' because this guy was seeming a bit weird.
I chimed in to remark that maybe they shouldn't use the word "autistic" as an insult considering that I have it, also and the owner responded with "If you're offended by it then you're just sensitive and I don't like sensitive people." and I just took that as my cue to leave and not bother with it.
Am I just too thin skinned? I mean, I can appreciate dark humour and I don't think that I get easily offended, but that doesn't mean I'll stand for an entire disorder being used as an insult and then being told that I'm the one who's at fault for not letting it fly.

No you're not thin skinned. It isn't acceptable.
It's a standard 4chan internet edgelord insult. The new "retarded"

No you're not thin skinned. It isn't acceptable. It's a standard 4chan internet edgelord insult. The new "retarded" I love how an episode of Family Guy censored "retarded" by saying "autistic" instead. And having lived through said insults for most of my pre-college life, maybe some to this day, I feel you.

It’s certainly crude. It will become less accepted in time. I remember people used to say “retarded” with great regularity and just the other day I heard someone refer to someone’s actions as “retarded” and it kind of took me aback for a second.
Times change slower than a lot of us would like, but we get there

"If you're offended by it then you're just sensitive and I don't like sensitive people." Ah yes, sociopathic gaslighting: the weak-minded fool's weapon of choice. There are hundreds of thousands of roleplaying groups out there, no need to bother one a toxic one owned by someone who doesn't care about their own players' enjoyment. If you just left the discord and left it at that, I'd say maybe you're not thin skinned. Posting about said incident on a message board and continuing to think about said chat room, does make you thin skinned. That is an incredible amount of bullshit you're slinging here. Publicly questioning whether you made the right choice leaving a discussion because of a manipulators' attempt at gaslighting doesn't make you "thin skinned," it makes you human. If what you said were true, you've got about 1.6 million thin-skinned individuals in this subreddit alone. Are you implying people shouldn't call out this kind of nonsense? Sorry, but again I disagree and reiterate that is some serious bullshit if you think it's acceptable to just let people say whatever they want just because it's how society is nowadays. This isn't "special snowflake" territory, this is basic human decency and respect. Far better to disassociate from people doing this than sticking around and making them feel like it's perfectly okay to spew that filth unaccounted for.

You're not too thin-skinned. It's majorly unacceptable. Anyone who responds like that to a simple request not to use a certain word as an insult is someone you don't want to waste any further time on, as well.
I like to think I got lucky with my roleplay circle. I've known all of them for years, they're great people who've been through the same bullshit with GMs and other players as I have. I could tell some pretty out there stories of stuff I've encountered, but that'd be off-topic as heck. Might be a good idea for a separate thread.
What do you roleplay, BTW?

I didn't know people were using "autistic" as an insult, that's pretty shitty.
Not long ago, I was flirting with a woman and she started talking about her boss. "That bitch is crazy, and she don't act right. I think she's bipolar or something." As a bipolar person, this made me simply walk away from the conversation. She was clearly not a women I should try to date.

Not fond of it, or "autist", or aspie, or other stuff like that thrown out as a gag. It's just shitty behavior.
Also instantly suspicious of "reeeee", "sperg", and other stuff like that, where some people may have picked it up without knowing what the insult actually meant, but which all goes back to the same ableist bullshit.

I'm curious now what "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" actually is. I always thought it was a terrified shriek associated with something that wildly does not jive with the user. Like a helicopter parent would go "REEEEEEEE" when the doctor asked them to leave so they could talk to their overprotected home schooled 21 year old daughter alone.

It's many times used as synonymous with "autistic screeching", the stereotypical portrayal of a breakdown of an autistic person, associating it with obsessing over details or some other small slight. I recognize that not everyone uses it for that, but that's often the sort of connotation.

I always associated "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" with nerd rage. Didn't realize it was used to put down autistic people. That sucks.

I RP quite a few things, DC stuff, original ideas and all that, ironically I don't RP wrestling related stuff on Discord because I often find that a lot of the people there aren't what Discord would view as 'literate', I mean, I get that not everyone speaks English for a first language, but I get put off when I see that people can't even spell 'You're' and instead go for 'ur.'

I also have autism and using it as an insult is just dumb, now more than ever. It doesn't really get to me, but I think to myself, "They have no idea what they're talking about." The spectrum is so vast. So they're take on what "autism" is a shitty and bizarre generalization on something so complex. It's 2020 and people should know better, but they choose not to.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's used as an insult by people who k ow they can't get away with calling something retarded anymore but refuse to grow up

one of my friends uses the word as an insult when there's an awkward character in a film or something like that. as someone who falls on the spectrum, it bothers me. however I don't want to tell him about my diagnosis nor that his words make me uncomfortable, cause I don't have any other friends here.
He seems to believe that he can say offensive stuff, cause he says offensive stuff about everyone. Jewish people, people of color you name it..

As the father of an autistic daughter (who’s low on the spectrum) and her circle of friends (some who are also autistic) I find it derogatory in how it’s used as an insult considering how intelligent and beautiful my daughter is.

People who use terms like that in ableist fashions are impossible for me to take seriously. It’s essentially this era’s version of how dumb people would say the word “gay” or “queer” or some homophobic slur as a generic insult.
And I was one of those dumb people in the past. There were periods as a kid I would use *that* F-word and *that* R-word casually, but not anymore since I matured.

Same here, especially when I have a few friends and coworkers who are LGBTQ and one of my daughter’s friends has Down syndrome. Being in the area that we live in and raising my daughter based on her “disability” has really made me open my eyes in how I see and judge people.
