People who use terms like that in ableist fashions are impossible for me to take seriously. It’s essentially this era’s version of how dumb people would say the word “gay” or “queer” or some homophobic slur as a generic insult. And I was one of those dumb people in the past. There were periods as a kid I would use *that* F-word and *that* R-word casually, but not anymore since I matured. Yeah. It's funny though, two of my best friends are a gay couple. And I usually call people who really piss me off "cocksuckers." Like when I'm extremely mad. But they know I'm not homophobic or hateful towards anybody in the least. Also, one of them works with special needs people. If his boyfriend and I are hanging out, if he says something is "retarded," he jokes that he has to get it all out because his boyfriend hates when people say that. But yeah, you grow up, you mature, you realize what those words are capable of. Not gonna lie, I still slip up and say the "R" word when somebody doesn't use a turn signal or something. My friends joke about them being gay, and if one is being moody, the other will say, "Stop being a fag." So it's really about how close you are with people, obviously my friends and I are quite an eclectic bunch. Black, white, gay, straight, etc. And we make fun of each other for all of that. I would never assume everybody is ok with it. Working in an elementary school that has "Life Skills" students, they're so nice, I always want to give them a hug. And also working with the Special Olympics in college, I hate when I slip and say that word, but it will never be directed at an actual special needs person.
