The way I believe WWE is looking at and treating NXT as a whole is with the glass ceiling on it they want NXT to get bigger ...just not bigger than Raw or SD.

It is, but then it's all about how you'd do such a thing. Like, me personally, I'd just have Becky run from the crowd, have security drag her away and then as someone's going to Regal for something, have him on the phone with USA Managment/whoever's running Raw about the fact that someone from their brand came down and caused a disturbance. Then you do whatever you need to do after that to basically keep each brand seperate but you've left a tease of something potentially down the road at the Rumble or something. Social media goes nuts over it, it's something you can show on Raw to get people to watch NXT and you've planted the seeds for a proper Becky/Shayna match. Win/Win/Win. I just don't want people to fall into the trap of "This show didn't draw a good rating, therefore it is a bad show", because that's fundamentally not true. It might just need to think outside the box a little bit, because in all honestly, I think we might need to come to terms with the fact that actual wrestling is like the least important part of wrestling to most TV watchers.Definitely agree with the beginning of that paragraph but BIG ‘ol full-on agreement with that last bit.

Even when NXT wasn't two hours the Dusty Classic felt like an offseason time or a filler arc. Agreed, I haven't really cared about the Dusty Classic since the first one.

This was the first week I didn't watch either show. NXT just sounded dreadfully dull on paper. I'm sure the wrestling was top notch, but I'm not invested the tournament at all. I do have both DVR'd so I may just fast forward to stay up to date on what's going on.

If there is a reason beyond luck of the draw, the whims of the Nielsen. Is that NXT doesn't have much of story I would say. it is simple and has great matches and there is a market for that, but it lacks stories that will hold you. Cameron Grimes in a missing hat storyline = ratings. Do segments with him searching all over town for it and even have him refuse to compete until he finds it.

NXT's ratings problems against AEW are problems with NXT as a whole, I think. What does WWE want NXT to be? If it's the developmental showcase, and it's presented as such by the company, it's going to lose against AEW's mainstage-style production and booking and promotion. Moreover, any main-roster stars sent back to NXT have had will have the stink of "demotion" on them while there. Such a treatment may work for a company looking to put its own branding ahead of its stars, but it does little for any promotion looking to grow audience interest and engagement. If WWE doesn't care about giving us individual reasons to watch, it's not going to get us to care about the company or what it's offering as a whole. It's forgotten what made people watch it in the first place. If it wants NXT to become a true "third brand", then the company and NXT's talent need to step up - in its production values, in its promotion of talent, in its visual presentation, in its touring schedule. That means, _everyone_ gets the 300+ day travel schedule yearly; _everyone_ gets the PR junkets and has to work on polishing their in-ring work and their promos and their ring gear. It also means more "input" (read: micromanagement) from Vince, more "input" (read: crappy camera work) from Kevin Dunn; and more of the BS booking that threatens to send many talents across all brands out the door and into AEW's or anyone else's waiting arms. My take on it is that WWE has grown, in my father's verbiage, "too big for its britches." Such a thing can happen. Bingo. NXT is still a good show, but they need to change the presentation. I said this in the AEW ratings thread, but I think a big difference for shows is how engaged the crowd is. AEW to me had an off show, but when you tune in and see a hot crowd, it makes a huge difference (at least in my opinion). And I think NXT has had episodes when the benefit from that like the USA debut episode as that crowd was electric and it made for awesome visuals. Bryan Alvarez made a good point on his show too. NXT right now clearly has a WWE fanbase. If the fanbase feels that a show is unimportant they aren't going to watch because there is 5 hours of programming they can watch. NXT just isn't bringing in new fans. Of course I think part of it is that I don't think WWE quite knows what they want to do with different people in NXT. I don't think NXT has to be like the main roster, but I do think that with the tv deal some things have to be treated differently

I think something that would probably help tremendously is if the next Takeover sees Undisputed Era get sweeped. They do seem to be one of the ratings draws NXT has going for them, not taking that away, but they've been the status quo for a long while now, the act was around and very prominent for a long time even before that, and really for just a gigantic chunk of its existence NXT has been ruled by heels.
You could maybe have Fish and O'Reilly retain, since it's not like there are better options anyway, but I do think getting the singles belts to Ciampa and Keith Lee would do a lot to freshen things up.
