Social media gives every idiot a chance to voice their opinion without a crucial bit of the way humans interact in real life: the warning shot.
So like, if you're hanging out and your friend is being a moron you go "Yeah I don't know about that..." or you roll your eyes and tell him he's on his bullshit again. This signals your friend that he's being dumb without having to turn into a giant thing.
On social media you can't do that. If you care about something stupid being said and want to fight back against it you have to make a decision if arguing against this shit is worth the emotional labor it will take you and it probably won't get any good done.

I hate it because of how people use it as a weapon and take it so seriously. A couple of years ago my ex best friend messaged me saying he had deleted my girlfriend off his facebook which was his way of cutting contact. It's also annoying when people post updates of their whole lives and relationships on Twiteer and Instagram and think people actually care.

Because it's basically a Typhoid Mary of extremism, spreading and amplifying the worst elements of society for profit.

My response to this would be, "Have you been on social media lately?"
It gives a loud voice to a lot of people who should not have the platform. Facebook itself is nothing more than a tool for people to look around in the business of others while they get fake information on everything from food to politics. It has evolved into a cancer.

At its best, it’s the most common and up,to date way to communicate that there is today. At its worst, it’s a collection of toxic a-holes spouting out diatribe that’s is 99% grade A BS. In short, social media isn't necessarily the problem, it's the people who use it. Social media isn't inherently bad. It's the anonymity of the internet that affords people this weird opportunity to be raw, unfiltered assholes and even good people I know use it for that. That's not my bag, but people weirdly get something from it so it will continue to manifest itself in that way. People use burner accounts to just be jerks to everyone. FB, Twitter, IG, YT comments, etc. Which is a great argument for a place like this, where people are mostly level-headed and courteous.

Of one day across the Internet (here, Reddit, youtube, fb, twitter, 4chan, etc) all anonymity ceasing to be. Full rendered picture of what one currently looks like, coupled with a few basic details. Suddenly that “road-rage-braveness” might not still be there and like a poster earlier alluded to, there’d be a sense of real-life accountability. Essentially, people might be more their actual selves.

I use social media to keep in touch with people and all that, but it seems that people use it as a means to display their worst side. When it comes to dissenting opinions on a form of media that go against the popular opinion, it seems that it gives people a right to be such assholes to that person. For example, I can think of so many times when I say that I like a film that a lot of people don't and those people say that it's okay to like it, but it's clear that what they say afterwards that they don't respect my opinion. They're not even being subtle about their lack of respect for it, even though they say otherwise.

I like and use social media to keep in touch with friends who don’t live nearby. It’s a wonderful tool in that regard, but for some it’s just an outlet for bullying, posturing, antagonising and downright nastiness. However, I’ve always thought that this says more about that person than social media in general. For the most part, I like to think that most people use it in a positive sense.

I personally don't like social media, and have no social media accounts. The only online interaction I have is here and email. I'd rather text or call people.
However, I didn't even know that "most people" we're against social media. It seems like everyone I know but me has a Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. Hell, even my 62 year old mom is on Instagram.

I have no presence on social media whatsoever (except here). I don't care what wonderful lives people have, what their opinion is, how they worship, or what their political leanings are; I couldn't give two shits. I keep it all private and do my best work in person. I know mine, and mine know me.

It’s always felt to me that you have to actively search for the awful awful people that anti-social media folks speak of. I’m on Twitter all the time. I follow who I want, and guess what? I never see hateful ignorant bullshit. Don’t get me wrong, I know they’re there, and they are awful... but if I’m not actively looking for or diving headlong into a rabbit hole I never ever see it. ::shrugs:: This has been my experience as well. It might also help that I'm not really interested in most popular entertainment outside wrestling, and even then, I don't follow any wrestlers on social media except Sasha Banks' corgi. In fact, my social media follows consist of like 70% corgis, a cooking group, a couple social issues pages, and then just friends. And I genuinely enjoy when my friends post pics of either their kids or their meal, lol, as the latter often gives me inspiration for places or recipes to try out.

I have a serious problem with the media building these tech and social media billionnaires as visionaries and messiah figures who are going to apparently usher in a brave new world and future with colonies on the Moon and people on Mars and all that other bullshit. They aren't. Many of them like Dorsey and Zuckerberg are just unethical greedy f***ers lacking any conscience who are prepared to platform Nazis if it brings them another mansion.

It's basically the epitome of "this is why we can't have nice things".
On one hand, it means you can get in touch with loved ones more easily.
On the other, well... everything else about it.

I mainly just use my Facebook for posting my film reviews and use YouTube for the same purpose.
A while back I would use my Facebook to complain about my job, make fun of customers, or occasionally post something stupid to generate some form of a response.
I simply got tired of having promoting negativity on my Facebook and posting drama. One friend suggested that since I have a passion for film and post a lot about it, that I should use my Facebook as a means of sharing my passion. Once I started doing that I felt a lot better and I noticed several of those "friends" who only reacted to my negative posts removed themselves from my page. There's enough negativity, drama, and ignorance in the world as it is. I don't need to add to it.
