I mean, I was originally going to call this thread "Why are people against technology" but I don't really think that people are against the entire concept of technology and things advancing to help us and this planet.
But it does seem that social media is something that a lot of people are against and, honestly, I can see why people don't like it considering that there are a right number of arseholes on social media, but, let's use me as an example, Twitter is a thing that I am on a lot and I think that I've made a lot of friends with people that I consider genuine friends.
I'm socially awkward in real life and it's not easy for me to go out there and make friends, I have a few, but not a lot of actual friends that I see in person. But, thanks to social media I've been able to connect with people from places like America and Argentina and we've formed genuine (as genuine as online can be, anyway) friendships.
I get that social media isn't for everyone, but, for people like me, it's helpful in developing confidence when interacting with people and it lets you get together with people who share the same interests as you. The thing is that there's a lot of dickheads, racists and assholes on social media and people like to paint everyone who uses social media with the same brush.
Like, if we didn't have social media, that wouldn't suddenly turn me into someone who'd be able to make friends easier, if anything, it'd make me feel more lonely and isolated...I am only now just realising how damn sad and pathetic of a human being I seem like.

Isnt your favorite wrestler being put through through the wringer right now on twitter? Good example of why some people might hate it.

Because most social media is trash. FAN was the place where I developed my confidence.

Social media brings out the worst in many people. It gives their worst impulses as human beings the ability to escape on a click, and there are many, many people on the various platforms that thrive on enabling that behaviour. Easily led people air opinions the never would in real life, and get a positive response from aholes, and they keep on doing it, getting progressively worse. It happens on politics, race, most fandoms too, and it gives people a direct channel to be their worst selves at people they know off the telly, like that makes it okay to be rude.
Facebook is bad in another way, people airing every detail if their lives, giving the company data it has a Long history of misusing, as well as stalkers, you can track down most people and snoop through their lives and cause drama and havok for no reason other than enjoying attention.

At its best, it’s the most common and up,to date way to communicate that there is today.
At its worst, it’s a collection of toxic a-holes spouting out diatribe that’s is 99% grade A BS.

Yeah, I don't use any of it, and I don't want to. First off, I don't give a shit where people are or what they're eating or what their kids are doing. Nor should people care about my mundane life.
Second, when every dumbass ignorant racist, homophobe, xenophobe, misogynist, etc. got a platform to spout their idiotic and evil opinions, social media was never going to be used for it's intended purposes.
I don't need to follow or be "friends" with celebrities either.
If you use it to keep in touch with people you haven't seen in a while, or who live far away, cool. But honestly, the people on it who use it to broadcast their close minded and hateful thoughts have just made it unbearable, and I'd rather avoid that hornets nest altogether.

It can be useful. Just that these days people use it as an "echo chamber", a way to vent out their frustrations and anger thinking there are no consequences, not believing what they say or express could damage people or their image. And what about those threads about certain wrestlers in trouble for what they said in twitter? officialfan.proboards.com/thread/595540/wrestlers-shots-fans-social-media

It's all in how you use it. Most of my feed consists of archaeology, paleoanthropology, and prehistory news groups. Oh and classic wrestling pages.
I also have severe social anxiety, so it's the best way for me to talk to my friends, old and new.
Oh, I forgot to mention cat pics and vids. Lots of cat pics and vids!

Twitter seems like a buncha peeps in a bar trying to yell over one another in a certain amount of words.
IG seems shallow AF.
I get cranky about technology at times but I also check myself and appreciate it. We live in blessed times IMO.
But social media? lol. Ya can’t convince me it’s not mainly negative for people.

Social Media is a wonderful tool for entertainment and the common good of all. It's also useful for allowing millions to act like foaming-at-the-mouth idiots AND it's an overly useful tool to manipulate the masses.
It's probably the biggest double edged sword of our time.

I don't know what Wish and Facebook are exactly mining from my search history, because I get tons of oddly sexual ads, which ok, that's probably the porn use, but I still have no idea how the unidentified Ziploc baggie of unmarked pills always shows up as an ad.

It’s always felt to me that you have to actively search for the awful awful people that anti-social media folks speak of. I’m on Twitter all the time. I follow who I want, and guess what? I never see hateful ignorant bullshit. Don’t get me wrong, I know they’re there, and they are awful... but if I’m not actively looking for or diving headlong into a rabbit hole I never ever see it.

There is so much I want to ask after reading this. But anyway, I don't have an issue with social media as a whole; Facebook honestly is a good way to connect with family and friends and Instagram is good for... I don't know, food pictures and celebs posting increasingly revealing pictures. Twitter, though? A completely useless platform full of toxicity. I'm sure there's plenty of folks who find a way to use it, and that's great, but we're better off without it. Also, Twitter has lessened WWE promos (especially with the women's division) where it's back to calling others sluts and whores and mocking fans with criticisms.

There's no way to comprehensively answer this without breaking forum rules, but TLDR: these companies trade off your information regardless if you desire to keep certain things private and, in countries with little or no human rights, actively cooperate use of their platforms with the state to horrible, horrible results. That's without getting into the shallowness of IG, the proliferation of pyramid schemes, and their complete subservience to corporate media.

Social Medias are mostly designed to favor arrogant extroverted atittudes with no apparent dowside for acting like that.
twitter being the biggest offense to that
