This may be Sony's doing, but this could also be Kevin Feige's doing. It could be, sure, but on the one hand you've got a guy whose track record in the last decade has seen his studio pump out box office smashes like clockwork with little to no creative or production issues. On the other you've got a studio that has become synonymous over the last 15 years with making terrible decisions at every level of the filmmaking process and negotiated a new working arrangement with Marvel/Disney that gives them greater control over the solo Spider-Man movies than they did in the previous two. Eh, I wouldn’t say little to none, the Patty Jenkins stuff is still a pretty big black eye and the Edgar Wright Ant-Man stuff is just a mess. Like, they seem to be better more recently with people only leaving due to creative differences on a positive note but it hasn’t been smooth sailing in parts. So it’s not something to rule out entirely.

So it’s not something to rule out entirely. Wasn't it pretty much confirmed that Patty Jenkins thing was mostly a Perlmutter thing? Feige answered to Perlmutter until 2015, so yeah, while I should've only given Feige full credit for the past six years (which is hell of an achievement given the success in that time), both Patty Jenkins and Edgar Wright exited their movies when Ike had final say over most things. As I recall, Natalie Portman didn't want to do a Thor sequel for the money that was being offered (Perlmutter is a notorious cheapskate who even wanted to recast Tony Stark with a cheaper actor) but agreed to a lower fee if Patty Jenkins was hired as director. Once Portman was under contract Jenkins started butting heads with the Marvel Creative Committee (Perlmutter, Brian Michael Bendis, Alan Fine, Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley, and Jeph Loeb) over the story she wanted to tell, and before long Jenkins was gone and Alan Taylor brought in on the cheap. Edgar Wright is also reported to have left after hitting too many roadblocks put up by them, and James Gunn briefly considered quitting before Feige convinced Disney to put Marvel Studios under the supervision of Alan Horn, whose entire job since then has apparently been signing off on budgets and letting Marvel Studios do whatever they want.

Spider-Man: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
(Not a reference to anything, just imagining how the logo would be like with the subtitle text just being the Spider-Man mask O's on repeat.)

So Tobey Maguire’s Twitter account is reactivated for the first time since 2013. Take that as you will.
