MrElijah will appreciate this The Dark tournament arc can be considered a candidate for best arc for YuYu Hakusho and just had a lot of stuff going for it for it and it hit a lot of big moments that made it feel like a final arc Yusuke growing as a character, Toguro truly feeling like a final boss, all the side characters playing a part in the bigger narrative and the fights itself being great Just a great arc that didn't slow down one bit

It had a lot of great stuff, but it also kind of felt super long to me, and it also was one of those things where I was bummed out that we moved away from the whole "spirit detective" thing into being another shounen fighting thing.
Bleach did the same thing with the Soul Society arc, just way worse since that added roughly 4000 new characters and made following the story an absolute chore. At least Yu Yu Hakusho didn't do that.

They could have cut out some of the beginning parts but it built narrative so I have no real complaints about it I'm glad they did move away from the Spirit Detective starting arc because for the longest I could never get into YuYu Hakusho thanks to the beginning being boring

It might be the best tournament arc in anime history. If I had to name some tournament arcs off the top of my head that hit besides YuYu Hakusho: My Hero Academia: That arc hit and developed a few side characters and led into a major conflict Naruto: Genin exam arc is filthy with crazy good fights which also led into a story changing conflict Honorable mention: DBZ: The start to the Buu saga. It was fun and had the potential to be even bigger if they figured out a way to bring in Buu without killing the tournament

As for DBZ, you could agree that well honestly DB's arcs were just better when it came to that. Which brings up a good point...why haven't we had a really dope tournament arc for One Piece yet? I mean they HAVE to be cooking one up lol. AND I'll throw in Battle City from Yuigoh lol.

It might be the best tournament arc in anime history. It's this or the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament from the original Dragon Ball for me. The Dark Tournament really added layers to the cast, from Hiei growing to trust his team, Yusuke growing up a bit, Kuwabarra being the rock of the team and Kurama's great thinking.

I still need to buy that arc on bluray.

Because everyone in One Piece is too f***ing OP lol If they had a chance to do one, probably would have been for Impel Down. Have people fight for favors or favorable treatment. Hell, just make the Marines be dicks about it and say it is for fun. They had Crocodile, Luffy, Buggy and Ace down there. Those 4 might murder everyone

Yeah this is easily one of my favorite tournament arcs.
It’s honestly my gold standard for fighting tournament arcs.

Maybe once we find out more about the world, shit maybe Kaido stops all this bullshit and forces people to fight in a tourney? Maybe the WG idk lol.

Goku always inches a little closer to the World Title. Jackie Chun(Roshi) showed him he still needed to grow, Tien had slightly superior technique & a lucky truck and he finally pushed through against Piccolo.

It introduced so many character I love with fun personality and powers. Definitely on my top of tournament arcs, probably top 2 with Boku No Hero Academy's Sports Festival. The Dragon Ball ones before Z are pretty great overall. It helps that Toriyama avoids writing fights that are one on one fights at any cost The only well done multiman match is ,ironically, the first one the Raditz Fight.

Hell, even a story where they get stuck on an island and can’t leave until they beat everyone. You know that’s right up Luffy alley

That Dragon of the Darkness Flame though Hiei character went through a ton of growth. One of the better examples of former antagonist who you actually like while not changing their whole character too much
