There are tons of stories where I’m invested in a hero triumphing and justice being served, which in Death Note eventually does come to pass by the end, but this wasn’t one of them and that wasn’t Ohba’s objective when he wrote it. The fun of the series is watching Light try to outwit the authorities, and said authorities having to resort to unconventional means in their effort to stop him. I wasn’t as bothered by Near as much as other fans even though he’s not as interesting or sympathetic as L, and I don’t think we were supposed to like Melo to begin with. But both half’s of the anime/manga are way, way better than the Netflix adaptation. Lakeith Stanfield tried his best but he was swimming upstream with that one. The less said about that Netflix adaption the better But yeah, if you ever thought Light was supposed to be the "good guy" you are reading it wrong. At best you're supposed to feel some type of sympathy for him but even then that is slim but more so you admire how cunning he is and how long can he keep this up. However, the same could be said for L which is what makes the story good because you have two sides you can choose from And as said before you see the dark path Light turns down as the series goes further. Killing Ray Penbar was his huge mistake as that is what made L keen in on him

I would say if you ever watch it again, look at from an outside perspective in terms how much worse can Light be. Light kiling people is wrong but you have people who don't mind the "bad guys" are dying as that was Lights original purpose. He killed others who stood in is way which is what ended up making him a bad guy. From L perspective even with Light just killing criminals that makes him an evil person because whether they committed heinous crimes or not, Light can't be God to judge people but the people see someone cleaning up the streets and that's what makes him a messiah. Yeah but like, this isn't a particularly interesting philosophical question to me? Yes: Light is plainly morally wrong to kill criminals, done. If this is about themes and ideas, you gotta go deeper than that. Also, Light just really is legit smarter than everyone... that's like established canon within the first ten episodes that I saw. L is presented as (probably) his equal, but I knew L was expendable and Light wasn't so Light would prove himself smarter in the end. I can't believe, based on the episodes I saw, there isn't supposed to be wish-fulfillment on the part of the audience for Light's character. It's like Breaking Bad's last few episodes, where Walter White "is bad" and "loses" but also c'mon people, he created magic traps to kill the villains (who had to be literal Nazis by this point to be worse than he was), he humiliated the namby-pamby losers that screwed him over before, he apparently became so sneaky and brilliant he outsmarted and outmaneuvered a kabillion cops, he had a weird, unearned tender scene with his wife, he secured his daughter's future (and wouldn't have if he'd never become a crime kingpin) and dies... after it's revealed he was just gonna die anyway. This is wish-fulfillment with a guy standing off to the side going, "No really, he's bad. Don't root for him, nooooo"

Once again, L is presented at least his equal if not smarter then Light. He's no expendable, he is legit Light's nemesis and the only reason he doesn't outright defeat Light is because he doesn't have access to the Death Note nor does he know it actually exist until later You would have to keep watching as I said to keep getting the full story. Also once again you are missing a crucial plot point once a new character gets introduced by the next episode

I absolutely loved Death Note until the episode where Light agrees to lock himself up to prove he isn't Kira. While I didn't object to the idea of that, I felt like the train, which was chugging along quite smoothly, went completely off the rails after that.
A lot of shows and movies are guilty of this - allowing things to get so crazy with way too many twists and turns. This show, though...whew boy! I felt like there was just too much going on during that second half and everything that I loved about the first half was gone.
I didn't hate it, but I did long for the pacing and fun of the first half while finishing out the series.

I didn't mind it, thought it was a smart idea since L basically was all but certain that Light was Kira and Misa was the 2nd Kira thanks to her f*** up It didn't take too long to get back to the pacing after Light became "normal" and they tracked down the group

Couldn't really get into it as it was basically "I know that you know that I know." "Ah! But did you know that I know that you know that I know!"
Like... kick him in the dick and root through his stuff. Just felt like it was all playing around because they had to prove that they were the smarter one rather than getting on track with things.
