I just finished the first audiobook. It was a nice story to distract me from the sequel trilogy. This really let me see that not all of the old EU was just wacky none sense. Liked it pretty well.
...and man, Bane is jerk.

There are a ton of gems in the old EU. That series, the Darth Plageous book, the X-Wing series, the Jedi Academy trilogy, I, Jedi, the Thrawn trilogy and duology, Shadows of the Empire, the Republic Commando books.
I could go on, actually doing the same thing lately. Since the new trilogy concluded I've been revisiting old favorites, makes me long for the old continuity sometimes, the good and the bad.

The Bane trilogy is one of my favorites, really hope to see Bane's reintroduced into canon. The Thrawn stuff and the Republic Commando stuff are great, too. But I'm a huge fan of the EU, I even liked the Yuuzhon Vong and the killiks, so I'm probably not the best judge.

I've been reading the new jedi order books from the beginning since last year. I still have like five more books to go through, but its rekindled my love for star wars after not really feeling the last movie trilogy. I've also been reading the original Marvel comics collections.

I read almost all the Star Wars books up to the Corellian Trilogy growing up. The Thrawn trilogy, and the X-wing series are the gold standards.
I personally loved the Black Fleet trilogy, as well as Truce At Bakura and Darksaber. It was so cool to read the books and be able to buy the Micro Machines toys of the ships and characters.

Honestly, the back half of NJO was fantastic and Traitor has one of my favorite scenes in Star Wars. Ganner's "none shall pass" speech was amazing.

But a lot of the stuff true about him in Legends ended up being in canon, too, like founding the Rule of Two after the Sith were nearly wiped out 1000 BBY. His spirit also made an appearance in the Season 6 finale of Clone Wars.

I wish I had read more of the EU books when they weee still canon. All I’ve read is a few of the short story books.Tales from Jabba’s Palace, Tales of the Bounty Hunters and Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina.

This makes me wonder, is apprentice and master the way the mods pass on duties? One to embody the banning power, the other to crave it.

I just tell myself it still is canon, and the Disney releases are a What If universe. It'd be well worth a read through either way. As Limity was saying, the Thrawn books by Timothy Zahn and the X Wing books are brilliant. For my money, they're every bit as good as the Original Trilogy.

Honestly, the Legends books now and the Legends books then are pretty much in the same category, and the difference between them being canon and non-canon is based on a technicality. Even when the Legends books were canon, they were a lower level of canon compared to the movies and later the Clone Wars TV show. So if a previously written book came in conflict with whatever crazy ideas George Lucas or his subordinates came up with, the book immediately lost out. The same thing is true now, only the new canon stuff is on a more equal level to the movies.
The biggest mess was the post-ROTJ books, and I'd rather have the sequel trilogy with all their plotholes and issues than the garbage written by Kevin J. Anderson or anything involving the Yevetha, the interchangeable new Imperial Warlord of the Week, Han Solo's loser extended family, or the Yuuzhan Vong (with Matthew Stover's excellent "Traitor" being the one exception). Only thing out of that era I liked were some of the video games like Kyle Katarn's, a bunch of the X-Wing books, and the original Thrawn books by Zahn.
