Steins;Gate 0 was kind of blah, but I'm not surprised they're still milking this thing for all it's worth.

Steins;Gate 0 was kind of blah, but I'm not surprised they're still milking this thing for all it's worth. I think kind of the issue with Steins;Gate 0 is that both the anime and game have their own separate issues, with the anime fixing some but adding others. Like, I do appreciate them sanding off the really stupid plot twist with Yuki, devoting more time to some scenes that were very brief in the game (like really I think the mostly anime-original episodes are generally the best things the 0 anime did), and giving the story a bit more breathing room with the timeline since it does come off pretty needlessly cluttered into a small span in the game, but trying to combine the stories onto one route just doesn't work at all, with tons of plot holes arising and Okabe's character getting way too bogged down in one singular mode for the entire thing, and there are all kinds of characters rendered completely superfluous by the merger that they for some reason didn't just cut. It felt like in general it was kind of terrified to leave out a single thing that they could possibly fit in, no matter how needless it really was; like the Ruka subplot means nothing and goes nowhere meaningful, but for some reason they needed to keep in everything leading up to it and try to play up the ultimately completely meaningless payoff like it was this huge dramatic thing. Though I think the key example of the problems with both of them is that not only did the 0 game have a completely useless, unconnected to anything aside about someone leaving brainless monkeys in a park in California but for some reason the anime kept it in.
