I seem to remember a particularly bad flu year in 2014. I remember a few people in their 20s dying and it being really jarring for a time. But there wasn't this level of tipping hysteria from the people and the media. I feel like people would be less crazy if it were already here, which it probably is anyway. I looked it up and the flu according to a Wash Post article "The influenza season reaches an epidemic level when the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza reaches a certain threshold: 6.8 percent. According to the CDC's latest available information on the flu season, the percentage is currently at the threshold."
So while we have never faced this particular virus, we have faced one of similar severity and done so without widespread panic and less political posturing.

According to the CDC's latest available information on the flu season, the percentage is currently at the threshold." So while we have never faced this particular virus, we have faced one of similar severity and done so without widespread panic and less political posturing. I read a fascinating article by a highly qualified individual, I'll see if i can find it but in the meantime I'll try to summarise. Let's compare this to SARS. SARS certainly had a higher mortality rate. However, we were able to severely limit its spread, to keep it isolated so the virus died off. What we're facing with COVID-19 is a vrius that has spread so far that all containment may fail. The isolation that was effective for SARS has not succeeded and we're seeing that by how far its spread. What this leads to is a virus then we can't isolate like Sars and becomes a permanant threat to our health. So in addition to flu, this would be a perpetual health threat leading to greater sickness (economic threat), strain on our health services and increased threat to mortality. I'm massively paraphrasing and I am not a qualified source by any stretch but that's the insight ive gained.

The f***ing shitehawks are out in force. A week ago a 50ml bottle of Hand Sanitiser was about £1. Now they’re going for £15. I’ve never had too much of an issue with people capitalising on demand and putting the price up a bit. But a 15 times increase on the price when it’s to do with a health product? Get in the f***ing sea! Damn, I thought Martin Shkreli was still in prison.

I was checking Kroger's website for digital coupons and they have a banner up top saying they were now limiting hand sanitizers and other health related items to five per customer, and all online orders would be adjusted for this. Heh

Cases in the U.K. have risen to 40, and five schools within a 30 mile radius of me have been closed. That's a little too close for comfort for my liking.

Also, for all the people making light of the current mortality rate of 1-2% think of it this way: if a million people get infected with COVID-19 and the mortality rate stays stable at that percent, that's 10-20,000 people dead. And the scary thing with this virus is how easily it can spread.

So 3 more deaths in the Seattle area where out of 14 cases that they know of, now 5 are dead. So yeah statistics and all that.

It is worth noting that of those five deaths, four were residents of a nursing facility, and this thing is pretty lethal to the old and infirm. I expect that figure to rise sharply given the precise location of that particular outbreak. To keep things in perspective, I've seen it quoted in several news articles that if you're under 50 and in good health you have almost no chance of dying (mortality rate is somewhere between 0.2-0.5%).

I believe that is probably the nursing home which isn't going to be a good model for normal health and age either. The majority of fatalities from Covid-19 have been to the elderly and those with preexisting medical issues. 3,000 fatalities is still 3,000 fatalities, but the illness clearly is most dangerous to those with compromised immune systems. Problem is, the vast majority of cases are just mild annoyances which, combined with the incubation period, makes spreading easy. A retirement/rehabilitation center is Club Med for a high body count.

I'm not losing any sleep over it. I'm old enough to remember when HIV, swine flu, avian flu, SARS, and ebola were supposed to kill us all. I'll not change my daily routine. I'll wash my hands, stay away from sick people, and stay home if I don't feel well. If I feel bad enough or if a vaccine gets developed soon, I'll go to the doctor.

Not to get political but as a reference, the UK has a "We'll see what happens" response with other emergency powers being brought in just in case.
Which I guess is good for some of the stuff going on wrestling wise the next couple of weeks but also...not quite sure I have faith in it, I guess.
Ireland only has one case so far as much I know but we'll see.
