Its worth noting that the original version recorded by Bruce Woolley dates back to 1978: To give the Buglgles credit, their version isn’t a cover. Wooley was in the Buggles when they wrote the song together. My opinion? It’s an 80’s song. Unlike most of the hits from 1980 and many from 1981, it does not sound out of place on an 80’s channel.

By the way, this album f***ing slaps. Title track is the bomb. 'Elstree' is great.

It's a late 70's synth pop song which means it's culturally an 80's song. Yeah, 80s stations are more about vibe than strict release dates. You wouldn't put that track on any sort of 70s mix. Same goes for The Police's "Roxanne" which, while first released in 78 didn't really start to connect and click with the public until its re-release in 79 and then became a cultural touchstone across 1980. It's absolutely an 80s song.

Music doesn't really divide neatly into clean decades anyway. Like, there's a lot of 2000-2002 music I'd call 90s music without thinking about it.

Let culturally they're considered music of the 80's.

Songs that came out in a year that ends with 9 tend to run into the next decade anyway, when you think about it. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I always associate "Tik Tok" by Kesha with 2010, but it actually came out in 2009. Same with Destiny's Child and "Say My Name", I always think it's a 2000 song, but it was out in 1999.

Oh nooooo, now TiK ToK is in my head! *Such* an earworm. Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy... How is this song over a decade old????

I'd put it in the same category as "Cars" by Gary Numan.
It's part of a wave of songs in the very late '70s that directly influenced the sound of the next decade, and it fits in better with '80s music than with what came previously in its own decade.
