So the other day, listening to the 80's on 8 Sirius XM channel, and you know what song played "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles was playing Is it just me, or does that song belong on the 70's on the 7 channel, because it came out in 1979.
Am I wrong?

Eh, I assume a bit of an overlap is permissible.

Generally, you're not wrong. With that song specifically, though. I'd say the whole "first video on MTV" thing would give it a pass for the '80s channel.

"80s stations" can be like this. Google Play Music has a channel called "80s Training Montage" that has played Ballroom Blitz by the Sweet (1976) and Live to Win by Paul Stanley (2006!).

I've so many memories about this song in Vice City, so it's automatically in the 80s one.

It came out in the 70s but it’s so tied into MTV and 1981 that’d be hard to think of it as anything other than an 80s song

It's a late 70's synth pop song which means it's culturally an 80's song.

Its worth noting that the original version recorded by Bruce Woolley dates back to 1978:

There's a lot of overlap in the 70s/80s because the 80s didn't have a set style until the country crossover. (Country was everywhere thanks to "Urban Cowboy" & "9 to 5".)
It's similar to the 2000's station playing Britney's "One More Time" or Christina's "Genie In A Bottle". The sound overlaps decades.
In retrospect, it's more an '80s song because it was so different than the majority of stuff from the '70s.

Released in the 70s. Topped the charts in the 70s.
It’s a 70s song.

I'm a geezer enough to remember it being "hit" for the Mini Pops. An album of covers put out by children.

The Limousines " The Internet Killed the Video Star" is catchy as hell.
But yeah, it's a 70s song that looks and sounds like an 80s song. But the overlap is true. I hear songs that came out in '89 played on the '90s channel, and vice versa.

It's both. It came out in the late '70s, but it was still popular in the early '80s and sounded more like '80s music than '70s music, generally speaking. Music tends to overlap decades like that. I actually get a little irritated when they play '80s-sounding music from '78 or '79 on a '70s station. To me, that should be on the '80s station.

Original song was '78, the Buggles version came out in '79... but it's probably because people will associate it with the launch of MTV. Videos existed before the 80's but MTV took it to another level.

I think of it as a 70's song that fits in among songs of the 80s, if that makes sense

Songs that came out in a year that ends with 9 tend to run into the next decade anyway, when you think about it.
