If you were online of course, or the early 2000s.
First one I used was a site called The Park in 97. Kinda sorta like a message board I guess. If you wanted to private message you had to make a new room but to tell the person you wanted to pm you had to do it publicly so yeah others would pile in.
MIrc I found next, then ICQ, AOL chat. I think there was some sort of Hotmail chat at one time as well.
Now I text, I do have FB chat but rarely use it or look at FB.

I started off with Microsoft Chat around 98/99, which was basically a user-friendly version of mIRC. Which you needed in the late 90s because a lot of people were getting introduced to computers for the first time. Does the term A/S/L even get used anymore? Or I am a dinosaur just for bringing it up? Here's what it looked like, for anyone wondering: From there it was on to ICQ after someone on MS Chat tipped me off to it. Then it was AIM, in which I had to be one of those kids who typed their username LiKe ThIs. Then I used a combination of MSN Messenger and AIM for years. Once those died out almost a decade ago, it's been pretty much Facebook Messenger exclusively ever since. I'll occasionally use straight up texting but it's rare and it's only for family or work.

I didn't get a steady internet connection until 2001. But I used AOL Chat, AIM when it became a separate program, MSN Messenger, and then finally made the move to IRC for a good chunk of my life from about 2002 to the early 10's.
For instant communication these days, it's Discord mostly. I keep forgetting Facebook messenger is a thing.

For the longest time I used AOL, AIM, and Yahoo Messenger when it came to chat programs of the nineties and early 2000's. Eventually AOL chat rooms became a haven for spam, porn, and troll bots with little to no relevant intelligent discussion. I attempted to open up an AOL chat room for serious like minded individuals in terms of music, politics, films, and conspiracy theories. None of them took off like I anticipated and I gave up on AOL chat completely.
As for chatting programs now it's mainly Discord.

First was AIM, then WWF.com's chat room (you can imagine how that was in '99), then Yahoo Chat & Messenger, then the various social medias.
I definitely miss AIM. It was an integral part of the middle school to high school experience for me.

I didn't get a computer and the internet until 2004, so MSN would be my main and only program.

It was an integral part of the middle school to high school experience for me. I loved the AOL WWF chat rooms for the longest time. Some of my earliest memories that are still amusing is fans pretending to be prominent WWF wrestlers at the time. You had those same individuals claiming to be Shawn Michaels, Sting, Bret Hart, or Undertaker in those WWF chat rooms. Lots of fun conversations and fans believing it was actually them in those rooms. Joined my first e-fed by being a regular in those chats too. I kind of miss those days honestly.

I remember, on Microsoft Chat, they had a chat room simply called "Pro Wrestling". And they had a bot for the host called "TheRef" that would boot people for swearing, and with it being in the hottest part of the Attitude era, you can probably imagine that people were getting booted pretty much every second of every day. I think the bot may have also run similar chat rooms for other sports because, when they'd kick people out, they'd say something along the lines of "That is NOT appropriate language for the sports chat rooms." I got kicked out for saying the word "cucumber" one time, so the technology may or may not have been a little screwy.

Used AIM from about 98 until 2006. Then switched to Trillian.

One chat I found by accident was Wireclub. Used it for awhile and found it incredibly boring, filled with an exorbitant amount of creepy individuals, and no real discussion going on. That's when I discovered Discord and have been happy ever since.

Does the term A/S/L even get used anymore? Or I am a dinosaur just for bringing it up? God, A/S/L gives me flashbacks. Yahoo chat was the main one. 13 year old me was a freaking idiot - my username was vaguely sexual and made it clear I was female, so I got invites/messages from a lot of creepers.
