Tammy Sytch entered a plea today of nolo contendere in Florida regarding on charges of one count of DUI causing death (DUI Manslaughter, a felony in the third degree), one count of causing death while operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked driver’s license (a felony in the third degree), four counts of DUI causing injury to a person, and three counts of DUI causing damage to property following the March 2022 death of 75-year old Julian Lasseter during a traffic incident in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Nolo Contendere is a plea by which a defendant accepts conviction as though a guilty plea had been entered but does not admit fault or guilt.

The DUI Manslaughter charge had been the most serious, as it is considered a felony in Florida and if she is convicted, Sytch could face up to 15 years in prison, with a four year minimum sentence as well as up to $10,000 in fines. Sytch will be sentenced on that charge and the count of causing death while operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked driver’s license this November. The second charge could net her up to 10 and a half years.

The State of Florida has accepted the plea, asking the court that in exchange for Sytch's open plea that all the misdemeanors against her be counted as time served at the time of her sentencing and to have been served concurrent to the top charged against her. So the other seven charges will be resolved as well. Sytch has been incarcerated since May 2022.

Sytch will be sentenced on 11/27 at 9 AM.

Yeah. If the outcome is likely going to be the same, why not? 4 year minimum sentence won't fly by any faster just because you refuse to accept responsibility.

I would guess to try and make any lawsuit filed against her a touch harder. She can claim she didn't want to or couldn't afford to face trial but maintains her innocence.

Edit: Sorry, quoted wrong post but this is the likely reason. Also since she isn't technically guilty, I don't think this could be held against her should she make it so long after lock up without issue, not sure on that one though.

Yes, the family is probably considering suing her for damages in civil court, so this is meant to provide some minimal buffer against that, I think. Pleading guilty (accepting responsibility) puts her on the hook for a damages judgment, but no contest means they have to still go through all the hoops of establishing her guilt if they're seeking damages.

So she's accepting a plea while also denying responsibility, even though they've got her absolutely dead to rights.

Were I a judge, I'd be inclined to throw the plea out and tell her she can go to trial or acknowledge what she did.

She might only be in her 50s, but even a relatively short sentence might be for life.

I think the judge has the right to say that the plea deal cannot be accepted... so

this seems awfully lite for everything with the plea to me

Not that she took particularly great care of herself before, but she looks like she's utterly given up on life since she was put in prison. Probably the only "improvement" you can point to is she's (most likely) sober in these photos.

If past is any indication, she gets off light. Sure the gravity of the crime on another level but the courts are a joke when it comes to repeat offenders. I hope I am proven wrong.
