A great wrestler who was a main eventer during a downtime. A more interesting what if is if Bret Hart is removed what is the program that takes Steve Austin from a really good wrestler in the midcard to a level of over not seen since Hogan?

A great wrestler who was a main eventer during a downtime. A more interesting what if is if Bret Hart is removed what is the program that takes Steve Austin from a really good wrestler in the midcard to a level of over not seen since Hogan? Bret putting over Austin, despite beating him, at WM 13 definitely played a big part in making Austin. It is why I find it strange that Vince chose Shawn over Bret. At the end of the day, Vince was able to use the heat of the Montreal Screwjob to come back and beat WCW, but I can't imagine he planned it that way. Obviously things were gearing for a changing of the guard with Austin coming up as the top face and the Rock coming up as a top heel. Shawn was an unreliable drug addict, who didn't like to put people over, even though he was still relatively young. But had he been healthy for WM 14, what would have happened? Also, where would the Rock and Mankind have been if Shawn was able to stick around?

I was going through my head all of the classic matches from just his singles run pre-1996. I was going to list them here but stopped once I got to about 20 matches and figured everyone would come up with a similar list. That should tell you everything you need to know about his in-ring legacy. He was never going to have the buzz that Hogan or Austin had mainstream but his legacy was certainly secure.
