so my buddies and I went to Ocean City at the end of June and the other day it came out two of the bars we went to closed cause of staff members testing positive for Covid.
No worries though as I had a doctor's appointment pre scheduled for beginning of last week snd got a test anyway since I said I went to the beach and I tested negative.
Do know a couple people who have gone to other beaches recently and tested positive but were asymptomatic. They also have already been at home a majority of the time and they have since been tested again and are considered healthy now

So Florida declared the highest one day total of new cases for any state with 15,299 new cases. This is going well.

Just curious. Any parents here? Where do you stand on the schools? No shame intended on either answer, just genuinely curious. My kids are all out of primary school, so my opinion carries far less weight, but my nieces and nephews are all going back and it scares me for them and the rest of my family. I know that online isn’t adequate for many kids, but they can at least do alternating days, block schedules, and supplement that with online in order to make it much safer. Going back full stop is insane, especially in states like Florida, a state that just announced 15,300 new cases in one day (and that’s with deliberate under reporting). IU announced that all students have to be tested (processing those tests will become my new full time gig as the resident robotics expert in the Genomics center). Masks are required in all buildings unless you are in an isolated room (though I will lose that option in my lab space now). They are taking this extremely seriously, which makes me feel better about my kids and niece being on campus.

I would like to thank this thread for restoring some sanity (cheap pop). Some other (non-political) sites I visit have forum members tripping over themselves trying to tell everyone that this is STILL no big deal and just like the flu. Yes, even now.
Typical exchange:
"Wear a mask" "Oh yeah? Do you wear a mask during flu season?" And they love to talk about death rates, as though getting COVID has no other issues (short or long term). Oh, and there are legit arguments about if someone died of COVID or with COVID.

I've been overhearing that at work. I've also been having fun letting my coworkers draw their lines and take the hill of it being legally and morally wrong for the government to exercise authority over our bodies. At which point I say, "So you're pro choice?" Watching their code get reset in their heads is priceless.

This is really key to illustrating why the "we need to RESTART THE ECONOMY!" argument is bunk: Essentially, you can say "we're reopened!" all you like, but the vast majority of people aren't interested in going to Chili's if it means a much higher chance of catching a respiratory illness with potential lifelong complications or, and this is fun, a chance of getting sick enough to be hooked up to a ventilator to die painfully while nobody's allowed to visit you. It's disheartening to hear about places where people aren't wearing masks and are cramming into restaurants and bars, but the majority of the country isn't doing it; this is good in the sense that there's more sanity out there than it might often seem, but negative because so many states decided to force reopenings so they could avoid paying unemployment and other benefits, which only works out well if all the reopened businesses can operate at full capacity and bring in their usual customer base. There's a massive economic shitstorm brewing, to be sure. As for schools, yeah, the fact there's been so much more effort put into how to open bars than how to open schools is bullshit, and the onus being placed on teachers to fix everything is even more ridiculous. There's no excuse for any of this; this is all going about as poorly in the States as anyone could've imagined, and it's been pretty easy to spot why. The donor class convinced all the right people that the choice between suppressing the virus and keeping the economy running was a binary one that required sacrificing one for the other. It was always a false choice. The economy could be completely reopen with zero mitigation tactics whatsoever and, guess what? People still aren't going to be flocking anywhere because they know the virus is still out there. They know all this, but they don't want us to know it. I work at a Panera Bread franchise. Our dining room has been open for over a month. Before COVID, our dining room would be the most packed place in the community. Now, we're considered "swamped" if even half of it is filled. People still aren't comfortable going out. That's because we've done a horrendous job of alleviating any fears by failing to keep this thing in check.

Bunch of people in my small-ass town have it now due to idiots going to the beach. I don't go out much and when I do I have a mask and gloves, but my dumbass cousin takes no precautions whatsoever so very real chance everyone in the house is going to end up with it.

Wore my work-issued face shield out to Target today because the one I had broke (ugh), and was getting all sorts of stares.

Betsy f***ing DeVos. The Secretary of Education, who pretty much flat out admitted she was nominated for the position due to her huge contributions to the Trump campaign.
I struggle to think of an administration that has been as violently incompetent as this one. At every single position.

Virtually all ambassador positions are filled with donors outside of a handful.

Cool story; to follow up on that, who is the Secretary of Education an ambassador to, or is it a position with actual duties and responsibilities, which usually is or is not filled by someone who directly financially benefits from mis-appropriating the monies they've been put in charge of?

Key West just made facial coverings mandatory for anyone 6 and up even if they’re social distancing.

Just curious. Any parents here? Where do you stand on the schools? No shame intended on either answer, just genuinely curious. I'm assuming you're more aiming it towards U.S. posters, but from the perspective of someone in the U.K. where schools have already fully reopened and most remained open as glorified babysitting services for essential workers, I disagreed with my ex over the school situation. I offered to home school our son as I have experience working as a teacher's assistant in his age group and did not want him put at risk. She chose to take up the option to keep him in school with the other essential workers' kids instead, so he's been in school the entire time. My sister, on the other hand, has kept all four of her kids home despite being an essential worker, and will not send them back until she's satisfied that Covid-19 is under control, regardless of how long it takes. Up in Scotland they’ve been closed since mid-March apart from the hubs for the keyworkers I agreed with the closing down initially and even when they said it was going to be up until and including summer I thought it was for the best I’ve started to get a bit more frustrated might be the best word with it because up till a few weeks ago they were talking about only going back 2 days a week. This triggered me because I was angry that they were making plans to open pubs and allow 22 grown men to get all sweaty, get their hands all over each other kicking a football around etc. but my kids school wasn’t going to be open 5 days a week? That’s just flat out misplaced priorities It’s changed the past few weeks now and currently scheduled to go back in August full time For me it’s not a babysitting thing. It’s a loss of education. I knew even before this what a great job teachers did and appreciated what they did/do but trying to home school and work all at the same time has been very stressful and my kids education has suffered. Even if I hadn’t been having to work from home it still wouldn’t have been anywhere near the level of education they get in school. It’s just not possible. Seriously any teachers reading this, you effin rock Ultimately this virus isn’t going anywhere and education is so important. I can understand any teachers POV where they worry about getting the virus but if we can open shops etc. to allow people to buy mon essential items then I think we can reopen the schools to allow kids a proper education. Of course, here in Scotland it’s easier to say that as the number of new cases daily is quite low currently (I think 12 new cases for a population of 6 million and no deaths in the past 5 days) Seriously though teachers, you rock
