That comparison of money given to the WHO versus money given to rebuild Notre Dame especially stings, as $1 billion from the small business loan program went to...the Catholic church. The sad thing is that will get missed by the general public since there is so much information coming out with this on a daily basis and the government isn't helping with their onslaught of misinformation. How in the hell can a church get money earmarked for businesses and direct payments to the citizens? I mean, they already don't pay taxes. Not to go down this rabbit hole too deep for obvious reasons, but many churches do employ lay people in various jobs, so admittedly some of that likely went to pay for their salaries at a time when things like collection money from parishes got low...but that doesn't cover everything, to be sure, because $1 billion is a lot of money and some of that was asked for due to *other*, more legal-based reasons that, again, we're not going to get into right now, but that I'm sure you can imagine.

Well, this f***ing thing finally hit close to home.
The former girls basketball coach at my high school, who coached two state championship teams, had three 1,000+ scorers, and who was one of the nicest people ever, died yesterday. He was 73.
My sister was on his second state championship team in 2004. He was literally a gentle giant. He was 6'8 and walked slow, but with purpose. He was famous in the area, and was in the Western PA Sports Hall of Fame.
This is the first person I know to die of this.😞

Obviously this is more of a less serious notion in the wider scale of Covid, but what do you reckon the future of cinema is going to be for the foreseeable?
Majority of Europe is slowly getting back up and running along with Asia, but America is still a basket case. So do films only get international releases and America get VOD, or do we wait on America calming down? Because we might be waiting a while on that front.

While I've bitched about it relentlessly in this thread, we received our superintendent's final plans today for reopening schools. Here are the highlights from the e-mail we received:
- No face masks required by students or staff. It is suggested that no one wears them for a large amount of time due to oxygen depletion. - Social distancing isn't possible, but in situations it is possible, it will be utilized. - Students will eat breakfast in their homeroom, but will eat lunch in the cafeteria. - If teachers contract the virus, they will still receive pay while in the hospital or quarantined at home. - Those teachers uncomfortable with this can resign from their positions without penalty.
So this f***ing sucks. Basically we either risk our health/lives or we can leave. I love my job, but I don't know what the hell to do.

If everyone threatens to walk if they don't improve those plans they can't risk that you'd follow through. Edit: Also, masks might cause oxygen depletion? Presumably the superintendent has a higher education degree. How can they be that stupid?

As far as the superintendent, it's a small town with a 'good ole boy network', so he got his position due to his family rather than his qualifications. In our district, the board chooses the superintendent, we don't vote on it. So we're forced to eat the shit and like it.

I boldly predict that the teacher shortage will dramatically accelerate in Georgia then. Also, I thought banning public sector unions was deemed unconstitutional years ago.

I have a feeling there's going to be a million different parables told in the future of "the kid that refused to takes it's medicine" in regards to the USA. All we had to do was take our bad-tasting medicine and actually shut her down for a month/two. Instead, we are a couple months deep with no end in sight. Instead of taking a 0% for 2 months we decided to take much less than 100% for an untold number of months.
The classic "spending tomorrow's dollar to save today's penny"

We gave $5T to the rich and corporations and asked them to pretty please not hoard every penny of it.

All the "warp speed" effort on vaccines is going to look really bad in hindsight if this thing turns out to be able to mutate to the point where it'll take yearly vaccines to fight.

Huh, I guess I always assumed that right to work and no unions allowed went hand in hand. In that case, Wyoming is both a right to work state, and a state where unions aren't allowed, if not outright illegal. And also the worst state in the union.

It’s amazing how NY hasn’t relapsed yet. We seem to be doing relatively fine, Have New Yorkers greatly altered their behavior? How was their reopening any different from Florida or Texas? It maybe the virus has run out of places to go, if the British study on immunity lasting a few months is true then NYC would be the proof if it gets a second wave in the fall, it was the one place where antibody tests indicated a significant portion of the population had it at some point (far more so than other hotspots such as Madrid).
