From 1991-97, did the Honky Tonk Man ever come home and make a stop in the USWA? I know Wayne and Jerry relationship was hot and cold over the years, though if Jerry felt there was money to be made, I think he would over look that.

One of the biggest reasons HTM didn't come through more often after he struck gold in WWF is that he really liked making money as a wrestler and Memphis was still paying in peanuts.

Lawler fired me when I asked him to sign the paperwork for food stamps." Now of course that is coming from Jamie so who knows if he is legit or not. But talked to a buddy that worked in Memphis in the late 90s/early 2000s. They didnt make crap ,unless they happened to be very popular and sold lots at their gimmick tables.

Haha Undertaker apparently had to sell his dog because he couldn’t afford food.

Memphis was a good place to learn to work a crowd, to get some exposure, and to network a bit because so many people would roll through, but you sure as shit didn't want to stay there long.
One of the strengths was also a weakness: part of why people didn't get paid well was because they'd have so many people on the cards. If they told more people "no", that's fewer slices needed for the pie, but I mean, Jarrett and Lawler already would have had their portions, regardless, so it didn't make a big difference to them one way or another. Better to just let people leave by their own volition.

Yeah Memphis was always terrible pay unless you were top/top. Dutch Mantell probably had the best quote ever on it. Jerry Jarrett came into the locker room once and said something to the effect of "Get off the gas if you are on it, guys." Mantell replied, "Jerry, the way you pay us, we aren't on food." I have no idea what inspired Jarrett to think his guys were roiding or why they needed to get off of them all of a sudden, but yeah, sums it up pretty well.

I have to wonder if this was during the point in time when the WWF steroid scandals were going down and Vince was prepping Jarrett to run the company if he went to prison. If so, Jerry was likely being "proactive" in getting his own guys ready to bring into the promotion if that happened.

Jeff had already gone to the WWF at this point and Jerry was sending a number of his workers Vince's way afterward.

I may be wrong and feel free to correct me but the only Memphis guy Jerry every pushed was his son. Vince even had to talk with Jerry about why he was dedicating so much tv time to Jeff.

Vince just randomly brought in the most successful independent promoter of the previous 30 years when he was in the fight of his life for well, you know. I do think you are probably right on the timing as it would make sense.

You are wrong, he'd also push whomever was tagging with Jeff.

I forget he was there when Memphis was a WWE Developmental.
