So apparently the latest episode has caused a fair bit of pearl clutching on the Trekkiesphere. But hey, I'm sure the author of this letter is - at last - pleased:

So wait, is that a real letter Paramount received? It's unknown for sure, but that image has been floating around the internet for at least 20 years now. I never saw that letter, but I do remember in the Communicator magazine, the uproar that DS9's In The Pale Moonlight caused, up to Majel Rodenberry writing in, and later the uproar from a dumpy parent when a character said "shit" in First Contact.

This show is just not going to age particularly well. I’ll go on record and say, as someone who likes Discovery and Picard more than most, Lower Decks is going to age WAY better than those two will. It’s a Star Trek show that, frankly, knows and loves the fact it’s a Star Trek show and as someone not as knowledgeable about Trek as others even in my family, that’s infectious. EDIT: Also: “I’ve trained them to skip foreplay!” is one of the best lines ever uttered on this or any other Star Trek show. I howled!

It has geek cred with how much it calls back to and tries to move forward with familiar Trek lore and beats, but if all it takes to get fans hyped is the show having irreverent drunks, cuckoo landers, and orgies, then, sorry, that's not Trek to me. When I think of the real 'lower decks' I think of a more sophisticated and bittersweet entry from Next Generation. I may be just too old for this, but I think Trek's well and truly lost something, be it it's mind, or it's soul, and trekkies nowadays are just content to let that happen.

I mean, I don’t know what you expected from that then an adult comedy with Star Trek not advertised as anything but an adult comedy with Star Trek but eh, you do you.

Well, that’s perfect because I enjoyed the first part of the first season but the second part it actually became a really good show in my opinion I wanted to like the first part of the first season and I almost was watching it reluctantly until Episode 8 happened and then I was all in. The finale is one of my favorite Trek things in a long time.

So I watched the final episode from this past Friday and, somewhat ironically from the show's presentation from the start, it was the most Star Trek the show has been unironically. {Spoiler}And goddamn, the ending with Captain Freeman being arrested because of things that happened across the season that are wrongly linked to her? That's a hell of a way to end the season.

Oh that's a great poster. I don't think I've ever watched a show where the trailer was so off-putting but the show itself was a lot of fun. And S2 was even better than the first. Really looking forward to S3.
I really like all the characters (especially Tendi). And I also love that the TNG running gag of Cetacean Ops is a real thing here lol.

It took me a while to really get into it but midway through first season seemed to be it. Then with second season I found myself absorbing a few episodes at a time. I was definitely surprised by the finale. That said, I do enjoy how much it loves Star Trek. All the references to the various classic series are great.
There's room in my Trek fandom for different takes in the same universe and I've found something to like in every series. I do think Lower Decks has become to come into its own.
