On a recent edition of the Grilling JR podcast, Jim Ross revealed why Vince McMahon has a tendency to sometimes get rid of wrestler's secondary names and leave them with only one name. Apparently, it is a show biz thing, with him liking the idea of wrestlers being like other entertainers such as Cher or Bono, who were known by one name. Though he doesn't know why Vince eventually gave some wrestlers their second name back after a while... Why Vince McMahon Dropped Wrestler's Last NamesToo bad he didn't learn that the mentioned entertainers became successful not because of their one name but because of other factors as well.

Oh, I was expecting something utterly insane, like how he hated his teachers at school and thus their names were verboten in WWE or something.

If everyone is Cher or Bono, then is anyone really Cher or Bono?

If everyone is Cher or Bono, then is anyone really Cher or Bono? Once you factor in how large the roster is, you’d be surprised at how small the percentage is of those who’ve had their name changed in this manner.

That is actually a good point since this pet peeve of Vince does seem to have only affected lower-midcarders and not any actual main event talent during the course of Vince's national run.

Good thing he named an example of someone who got famous with one name within the last what 50 years at this point? That sounds like a Vince mentality to me...

Vince is a fascinating creature. He is obsessed with a lot of things but doesn't seem to have more than a surface understanding of any of it.

There are times that the single name thing works and there are times you get Ali or Murphy (not that Buddy Murphy is much better granted) or Trent.
Not that that last one's WWE, it's just a stupid name.

Vince is a fascinating creature. He is obsessed with a lot of things but doesn't seem to have more than a surface understanding of any of it. It's like when you are dating someome and you have a conversation where you find out what's at the core of how they rationalized things. You realize that every good experience you had with that person was actually fool's gold.

Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury arguably bigger stars than Cher or Bono?
Vince is weird.

In 1998 I remember watching a UK-only PPV called 'Capital Carnage' where Shane McMahon was introduced as just "Shane". Jim Ross on commentary said it's because he was such a big star, and cited those exact examples that are in the OP.
