What was the reason for this "gimmick"? I've never understood it. Becoming so popular but Vincent J. McMahon keeping with the booking plans he had set regardless and taking the title off of him frankly killed Graham's confidence for a time period. I kind of assume that he wanted to spruce up his image and, by this time, a lot of people were already biting his Superstar gimmick, anyway. Maybe he thought this would make him seem new. |

There is an hilarious gif of him doing a prematch karate chop sequence, but I can’t find it now.  Graham in some of his promos did a complete 180, somehow going from a bigger than life mega star to someone with negative charisma: "Karate Champion of the world."He looks for all the world like someone who inadvertently stumbled into a spider web. |

Some men can shave their heads and look 10 years younger. Some 10 years older. Unfortunately Graham was in the later group. Add to that the unfocused gimmick (Master of Kung Fu... & The Full Nelson) and the awful promos.. yeah.

Can someone please make the karate GIF have him fighting the birds from Birdemic?
Also, it's wild to watch the 2006 WWE DVD doc on his life, which notoriously give everything the rose-colored glasses treatment, and having everyone universally say how unwatchably awful it was.
Side note about that documentary, again deviating from the rose-glasses treatment, the one and only person Graham says he enjoyed working with was Dusty Rhodes, and Rhodes is the only contemporary of Graham's who said he enjoyed working with him.

Yeah for some reason I read his book in high school and the only thing I remember about it is his talking about bonding with Dusty Rhodes over their love of Bob Dylan I met Billy and his wife as they were exiting their car and going into the store for a book signing in 2006. They were great people, especially Valerie who my father talked with the entire time I was in line for the signing. I was going through a really bad time with my employer at the time when I read the book and watched the DVD so I loved the story of redemption with Billy after so many years of bitterness towards WWF. It's really a shame what has happened since with WWE letting him go and Billy going ape crap online or anywhere else he can with his hatred of WWE. I'm sure that's who he really was inside when I met him but he was employed by WWE at the time so he was obviously happy but I wish WWE could have had him under contract in some sort of capacity. He could still travel at the time and could teach a lot of these guys about promos and working the crowd. |
